Each week, Best of NJ introduces readers to new eateries in their area. But as a special annual feature, we curate our best profiles as one easy-to-read feature. With this in mind, we are proud to present the Best of New Jersey Restaurant Guide for 2023. These are the restaurants we showcased throughout the previous year that deserve special recognition.

These spots caught our eye because of either their unique menu, interesting backstory, community-driven approach, or eco-friendly practices. For instance, their most popular flavor is Ube Nutella Oreo. Meanwhile, Boomerang Bites sells handcrafted, authentic Australian bite-sized treats made from the finest ingredients in 15 unique flavors. “Our best sellers are the salted chocolate caramel, for the chocolate lovers amongst us; as well as the passion fruit, which has a cult following of its own,” Owner Andrea Rizvi says.

Bloom Chicken

Bio: Bloom Chicken serves Korean Fried Chicken with a variety of signature sauces. Though the area is no stranger to this style of chicken, Chef and Co-owner Woo Sung Cho isn’t worried; he believes his business stands out from the pack because his food is made with passion and sincerity. Their slogan — Blooming with Flavor –represents their belief that this is no ordinary fried chicken; their signature sauces alter the flavor profile, allowing patrons to enjoy the same chicken in multiple ways.

D’s Dough

Bio: The cookie dough from D’s Dough is safe to eat as-is, but can also be baked. In fact, baking the dough produces a homemade, soft cookie that’s gooey on the inside and crunchy on the outside. In addition to cookie dough, the bakery offers scratch-baked cookies with ice cream. “We thought the neighborhood needed something new and sweet,” Owner Brayleah Kernan says of her woman-led business. Fun flavors include birthday cake, snickerdoodle, brownie batter, campfire s’mores, and peanut butter.

Grandma’s Pizza

Their menu features authentic options such as their Italian Rice Balls. Manager Ash Bitar’s favorite dish is the gnocchi in vodka or Alfredo sauce. However, other dinner entree standouts include the mandarin chicken salad and Sloppy Adam’s chicken Panini; the latter comes with chicken cutlet, bacon, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, and Thousand Island dressing.

Grumpy’s EAT BIG

Bio: Grumpy’s Owner Marcelo says he is always in a good mood. But don’t talk to him before he has his morning cup of coffee. Since he isn’t Italian, his cooking takes influence from his time making food with his grandmother in Peru. So far, popular pies include the Veggie Haters, The Big Grump (Marcelo’s favorite), and the Spinach and Artichoke Dip pizza. But the sliders are also popular, and come with a variety of fillings. They include shrimp parm, eggplant parm, chicken parm, and meatball parm.

The top-selling bakery items at Guzzo’s BakeHouse include donuts, lobster tails, croissants, and scones. However, they’re most famous for the cragel, a cross between a croissant and a bagel.

Prime No . 7

Bio: Prime No. 7 is the first restaurant in Mahwah to exclusively offer authentic Korean cuisine. They cook their BBQ using an induction grill for a quick and effective grilling method. Popular picks include the Oodae Galbi. For this, they slightly pre-grill the 7th rib of the rack over a charcoal grill to enhance the flavor; then cut and serve right at the table. Another favorite is The Chef’s prime rib, a short rib with a marbling to the cut. Pork belly is also a crowd pleaser, and comes with a variety of side sauces.

Bio: Qenko Organic Cuisine brings unique Latin American food to Essex County. “Our main objective is to bring a flavorful and rich cuisine to the area that has not yet been captured,” says co-owner Maria Verdezoto. In particular, the owners recommend the Lomo Saltado entree (sauteed onions and tomatoes with fries served with rice and protein). They also love the Chaufa Rice, Peruvian fried rice with eggs and scallions and choice of protein. The latter is made with either quinoa or white rice.

John’s favorite dish is the paella, which comes in three varieties; vegetarian, mixta (chorizo, chicken, grouper, shrimp), and espana (chorizo, pork, chicken, portobello). Bio: For a restaurant that debuted during a global pandemic, Freddy J’s is doing just fine. “Going into our second year of business, we have started to become a staple in the community,” Owner Grant Kneble says. “Somewhere you can grab a bit to eat and enjoy the company of those around you. The camaraderie that has been developing is something special”. In addition to a mixed menu of BBQ, sharable plates, and more, they now offer weekend bunch and monthly dinner club.

La Lupa

Bio: The menu at La Lupa changes every three to four weeks and highlights seasonal flavors and ingredients. For example, during peak season for ramps (a species of wild onion) they make a ramps pasta. But Co-owner Dan Fishman raves about the 36-ounce, 48-day dry-aged ribeye made on a charcoal grill from Japan. “You’ve never tasted anything like this,” he says. La Lupa also makes their own desserts on-site. Popular picks include the cookie skillet with vanilla gelato and the banana crème brulé.

The Chilean inspiration comes from 26-year-old Owner Max Oehlmann’s father, who was born in Chile. The star of the menu is, of course, the lomito. At Lomito restaurant, they serve the sandwich on ciabatta bread with braised pork, avocado, celery, tomato, and guajillo aioli. But their dry rub wings are also popular.

Bio: Everything at Flying Pig Tavern is homemade and fresh, from the bread to the meat. So far, menu favorites include the chicken parmigiana pizza appetizer, which doesn’t actually use any pizza dough. Instead, a base of crispy chicken cutlet is topped with tomato sauce and Parmesan. Likewise, their popular Bavarian pretzel starter and Bang-Bang shrimp with Thai chili aioli sauce often sells out. Their signature Chicken 65 is a spicy deep fried chicken entree marinated in Greek Yogurt, curry powder, and spices.

Bio: Naan Indian Bistro is a fine dining restaurant that offers a modern take on traditional dishes and cuisine. For instance, they combine “modern flavors and cooking methods with traditional recipes,” Hayden explains. All “whilst taking a holistic approach on Indian food and fine dining.” In particular, GM Hayden Auguste says they use ancient Indian heritage plus recipes with spices that have immense medicinal and healing benefits; then “combine them with modern dining aspects and bold flavors.”

Bio: At Nunzio by Chef Michael DeLone, the menu includes luxurious options such as seafood capriccio in a saffron lobster broth; as well as house-made gnocchi with prosciutto cotto in white and black truffle cream. All pasta is made in house, including favorites like squid ink spaghetti with lobster, zucchini, squash, and tomato broth. Another popular choice is the pappardelle, with roasted pork shoulder, prosciutto, broccoli rabe, and parmigiana. Chef Michael also offers a rotating seasonal menu.
