Flying Pig Tavern Brings Bar Food & More to Bordentown

The story behind the moniker of Flying Pig Tavern is pretty easy to guess. In short, Managing Partner Tim Kalavruzos used to joke with his partners they’d open a restaurant when pigs fly. Now, the team owns a spot in Bordentown that serves bar food, beer, and much more.

The 4,700-square foot Flying Pig Tavern sports a picture of a large flying pig wearing sunglasses outside. In fact, there’s even a life-size pig sculpture with golden wings and sunglasses in front of the building. Indoors, the two-floor rustic restaurant can seat 240 guests, with an upstairs room for private parties. There’s also a seasonal outdoor seating area for about 45 guests as well.

Unique Twists on Menu Favorites

Everything at Flying Pig Tavern is homemade and fresh, from the bread to the meat. For instance, food never sits under a heat lamp. So far, menu favorites include the chicken parmigiana pizza appetizer, which doesn’t actually use any pizza dough. Instead, a base of crispy chicken cutlet is topped with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese. Likewise, their popular Bavarian pretzel starter and Bang-Bang shrimp with Thai chili aioli sauce often sells out.

Their signature Chicken 65 is a spicy deep fried chicken entree marinated in Greek Yogurt, curry powder, and spices. (Which they serve over rice.) But save room for dessert, because Flying Pig Tavern offers a Nutella pizza to satisfy any sweet tooth. As for drinks, they have over 20 draft beers on tap, 16 of which are local craft brews. On top of weekly, rotating specialty drinks, Tim says the beer selection changes daily and, in some cases, hourly. Click here to see the full menu.

About the Owner

During the pandemic, Tim and 10 relatives took a cross-country road trip, trying many dishes along the way. The Flying Pig Tavern menu sports modified versions of local favorites from the trip. “We have a lot of great new twists on items,” Tim says. For example, they offer a shareable bacon appetizer that comes in three flavors—honey sesame, candied bourbon, and maple chili; an idea that sprang from “one of our many stops in the south,” according to Tim.

Tim grew up in nearby Hamilton, working at his father’s restaurant – Bordentown’s Town and Country Diner – as a teenager. Despite pursuing a law degree, he always stayed close to the family restaurant business. Now, along with his business partners he owns multiple catering halls: including The Merion, The Grand Marquis, and The Meadow Wood Manor in New Jersey; The Waterfall in Delaware; and The Arts in Philadelphia.
