There’s a popular Mexican spot in Lindenwold that is much more than the average taco joint. AXO Restaurant offers Mexican food with a unique Asian flair. The results are a unique mix of menu items that patrons won’t find anywhere else.
Owner and Executive Chef Jose Lorenzo describes the restaurant’s vibe as rustic. The interior features seasonal holiday décor as well as photographs and paintings made by Lorenzo himself. The restaurant is able to seat 55 patrons, including 15 seats offering seasonal outdoor dining during warmer months.

Mexican Cuisine with Asian Influences
The menu at AXO Restaurant mixes both traditional favorites and truly innovative Mexican/Asian fusion items. For example, they have Korean al Pastor tacos (pork al Pastor with pineapple, onion, and cilantro). Other popular picks include birria ramen, the ribeye rice bowl, seafood tacos (salmon, crab, and shrimp), and birria egg rolls. The latter is filled with a choice of taco meat. Mexican street corn is another fan favorite, but Jose’s favorite item is the asada fries.
So where does the influence of Asian flavors come from at AXO Restaurant? The short answer is Jose’s mom. During his childhood, there was no Hispanic store anywhere near their New Jersey home. So his mother instead would visit the nearby Asian market and cook with those ingredients.

About the Business
Prior to opening his own restaurant, Jose had a popup business selling birria tacos. He started working out of his garage before eventually finding space in a shared kitchen. AXO Restaurant is the result of his hard work paying off, as he now owns his own space.
Despite the Mexican/Asian menu, Jose actually has training in Italian cuisine. But given his childhood connection with the food, Jose decided to open AXO Restaurant as a fusion spot. His experience also includes working both the front and back of the house at numerous restaurants. Now, he operates AXO Restaurant along with his wife, Maricela. Interestingly, both are from the same area of Puebla, Mexico. But they didn’t meet until they were adults living in New Jersey.
