Babka Bailout & Boomerang Bites Come to Jersey City

Two women-owned businesses are working side by side to bring Jersey City an eclectic mix of menus. Babka Bailout and Boomerang Bites share a location, but each offers patrons a totally unique experience. While one serves Babkas and Rugelach, the other offers Australian baked treats.

Babka Bailout Owner Michal Prevor and Boomerang Bites Owner Andrea Rizvi decided to join forces and cut costs. They love the Heights section of Jersey City, and feel it is the perfect spot for their businesses. The 1,000-square foot space is primarily designed as a production center for wholesale orders. But they have a pickup window for orders, sell coffee on the weekends, and have a couple tables outside.

About Babka Bailout

Babka Bailout was born when Michal’s housekeeper, Carmen, was having trouble paying her rent. Michal and her husband are both experienced bakers, and decided to sell a few batches of challah and babkas. Michal planned to give the profits from this one-time endeavor to Carmen. But their babkas became so popular, Michal’s oven door literally fell off from all the baking. After a brief period moving to a commercial kitchen, Michal decided to open her own space.

In addition to traditional cinnamon and chocolate babkas, Babka Bailout specializes in creating new flavors “We make flavored babka that doesn’t exist in sweet and savory flavors,” Michal says. For instance, their most popular flavor is Ube Nutella Oreo. “When you cut into it, it’s purple!” she says. Other highlights include Nutella Oreo, dulce de leche, and cereal milk babkas. She says the latter “tastes like you’re eating a bowl of cereal with your babka.”

Meanwhile, their rugelach are treats packed with currants and walnuts. They come in flavors like Raspberry, Apricot, and Guava. Giving back to organizations that make a positive change in the community is at the core ethos of Babka Bailout. That’s why they donate to organizations such as World Central Kitchen, Bakers Against Racism, and Welcome Home Jersey City.

About Boomerang Bites

Andrea Rizvi was born and raised in Australia. At Boomerang Bites, she sells handcrafted, authentic Australian bite-sized treats made from the finest ingredients in 15 unique flavors. “Our best sellers are the salted chocolate caramel, for the chocolate lovers amongst us; as well as the passion fruit, which has a cult following of its own,” Andrea says. These “slices” are denser than a cookie but not as cakey as a brownie, and often have multiple layers.

Andrea’s favorite is the ANZAC, a mix of oats, coconut, sugar, butter, and golden syrup. Named after the Australian and New Zealand Armed Corps, the recipe was created by Aussie moms during World War I. It became popular because it could last the six-month postal journey to the front lines of Europe.

Boomerang Bites donates 20% of their profits from all sales to local charities. “Life is a boomerang,” Andrea says. “When you send out goodness, it comes right back.”
