Yella’s Brings “Food Worth Screaming About” to Hawthorne

A new restaurant in Hawthorne, Yella’s, uses the motto ‘Food worth screaming about’ to match their logo; an image of a man screaming with smoke coming out of his ears. The logo is meant to be a caricature of the owners’ grandfather, Frank, who was a caller for dances. Which means he was often screaming, hence the nickname, Yella.

Yella’s is a casual sub, burger, and shake shop that is new to Hawthorne. However, longtime North Bergen residents may recognize the name, as Yella’s served customers there nearly two decades ago. The restaurant also had a storefront in Jersey City for a few years. The brand itself is owned by the Lorenzo Food Group. Co-owner Joe Lorenzo, who owns Yella’s with his brother John, says Hawthorne is the ideal location; thanks to its proximity to Englewood and the area’s mix of blue- and white-collar clientele.

Taste the Difference

The 1,900-square foot Yella’s offers a menu that is 100% fresh, 100% quality, and 100% casual. “Everything is made from scratch and in house,” Joe says. The restaurant, which can seat 25 guests indoors, uses only the best natural ingredients for their handmade food and drinks. The options are all family-friendly and easily portable, with a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, and submarines. They serve milkshakes and desserts, as well as a small bites menu with chicken tenders and sweet potato waffle fries.

The Yella Submarine is an early favorite, filled with prosciuttini, hot ham, and salami, as well as provolone. Likewise, the Jersey Smash burger is a hit with sweet onions, white American cheese, pickles, and secret sauce. But this sandwich shop includes much more, including veggie, steak, and crispy chicken sandwiches. In particular, Joe’s favorite dish is the Benny Brown; sliced steak, sauteed onions, fresh mozzarella, and brown gravy on a sub roll. Click here to see the menu.

That Yella’s motto extends to desserts and milkshakes as well. Their signature milkshakes blend ice cream and natural syrups, then rim the glass with sprinkles or cookie crumbs; depending on the shake, they may even stick a whole cannoli, brownie, or strawberry shortcake bar on top.
