Lomito Brings Chilean & Latin American Street Food to LBI

Fans of Chilean cuisine will know that lomito is a classic sandwich that is full of flavor and style. Flavor and style is exactly what the new Lomito restaurant in Long Beach Island aims to offer guests. They use fresh, local ingredients and turn them into foreign flavors not typically available in the LBI area.

Lomito is a quick-service and rustic spot that serves tacos, quesadillas, chacareros, wings, and empanadas. The restaurant also offers fresh seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. The Chilean inspiration comes from 26-year-old Owner Max Oehlmann’s father, who was born in Chile. Max has also visited Chile a few times. “That is how I got into creating my own style of Latin street food,” he says. Though primarily designed for takeout, the eatery can seat 18 guests indoors and a dozen outside.

A Meaty Menu

The star of the show is, of course, the lomito, which is also Max’s favorite dish on the menu. “It’s a Chilean signature but with my own style and flavor profile of cooking the pork,” he says. At Lomito restaurant, they serve the sandwich on ciabatta bread with braised pork, avocado, celery, tomato, and guajillo aioli.

Other popular menu items include the quesabirria tacos, made with chile braised beef, Monterey jack cheese, consommé, and pebre salsa. Max also says they receive praise for their wings, made using house dry rub and adobo sauce.

“My goal behind this project was to create food in a high-end way, maximizing flavor; but taking out the pretentious and ego-filled style of service that’s associated with high-end eating,” Max explains. “So, the service style is similar to a food truck or fast food, just done in a healthy, flavorful way.”

About the Owner

Max has been working in the restaurant industry since he was 14. After training at the Culinary Institute of America, he spent time in New York City at Michelin Star restaurants; including working under chef Markus Glocker at Augustine. Prior to Lomito, he worked at Casa Mono, but lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Max returned home to LBI after Casa Mano, determined to open his own restaurant in town. Now, his menu at Lomito includes many dishes he grew up eating; foods either made by his mother or inspired by his father. Despite the familiarity, Max adds a unique twist or flavor to each dish, making the menu completely original.
