Cafe Archetypus

Details: The atmosphere at Cafe Archetypus is almost as exciting as the gourmet desserts on their menu. Calandra’s Bakery and Restaurant

Details: Double Batch is an online bakery, meaning they only accept online orders which are available for pickup or delivery. Otherwise, Double Batch has their entire menu available for orders placed at least one day in advance. Their menu includes custom cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and their signature croissamadas (a hybrid of croissant and Filipino treat ensaymada).


Erie Coffee Shop and Bakery

Details: The gourmet dessert at Erie is their custom cakes. They require five days notice for all cake orders, and only accept requests via email. The list of available cake flavors rotates seasonally, with typically about a half dozen options to choose from. Some of their selection includes flavors like Lemon Coconut Raspberry, Almond, and Chocolate Dulce de Leche. The latter features chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache layer, salted caramel, dulce jam, raspberry jam, and buttercream.


Le French Dad Boulangerie

Where: Montclair
Details: This artisanal bakery boasts a fun, quirky personality to match their name. The main focus of the menu is on French rustic breads, however, they also serve a small selection of desserts. In particular, their macarons and Salted Caramel St Honoré are fan favorite items. The macarons are available in more than 15 flavors, including Earl Grey, Nutella, and Passion Fruit. Meanwhile, the Salted Caramel St Honoré is a croque-en-bouche filled with salted caramel on a biscuit breton.


Glaze Donuts

Where: Fort Lee | New Milford | Nutley | Paramus | West Caldwell
Details: The donuts at Glaze Donuts are so decadent, we recommend only eating half at a time. If for no other reason, this method allows patrons to try more than one flavor at once. This gourmet donut shop is always inventing new flavors, but they also have a selection of popular mainstays. Apple Crumble, Banana Foster, Blueberry Crumb Cream Cheese, and New Jersey Cheesecake are just a few of our favorites. But Maple Bacon, SMores, and Twix are also top choices.


Jersey S’more Company

Details: S’mores lovers can customize the s’more of their dreams at this gourmet dessert shop. The ordering process is simple, as patrons customize their s’more in just three easy steps. (Every s’more they make is hand made and made to order.) The first step is to choose the size, between “S’mini” and “S’monster” before moving on to the chocolate selection. After choosing either dark, milk, or white chocolate, the final step is to choose toppings from a selection of 30.


Liv Breads Artisan Bakery and Coffee Bar

Where: Millburn | Short Hills
Details: Aside from an assortment of breads, sandwiches, and quiches, Liv Breads bakes cookies, cakes, and tarts. Their personal treats, like their tartlets and cookies, make for the perfect gourmet dessert for one. But for parties, special occasions, or just family dessert, they have a number of babkas, cakes, and cheesecakes. We recommend the Basque Cheesecake, a “burnt” cheesecake baked at high heat. This keeps the interior light and creamy, but caramelizes the outside.


Monteleone’s Bakery

Where: Jersey City
Details: This third-generation family-owned bakery has been in business since 1946. In fact, Monteleone’s is so old school they don’t have a website, email address, or social media. They serve cakes, pastries, and more, but locals love the bakery’s icebox cookies. These sugar cookies, named because they are made to be kept in the fridge, are chilled before being baked. Their cheesecakes, lobster tails, cannoli, Napoleons (flaky puff pastry) and tiramisu are also popular picks.


Palazzone 1960

Where: Wayne
Details: This Italian bakery bakes cookies, pastries, pies, and cakes. For groups, they offer decadent cakes like Strawberry and Chocolate Mousse, Profitterol, Cannoli Cake, Lemon Mousse, and Yogurt Cheesecake. Their pastry selection includes eclairs, babas, cannoli, lobster tails, plus their standout dessert, St. Joseph’s Cream Puffs. These Zeppole come with three fillings options: Cannoli cream with candied oranges, custard cream with black cherries, or chantilly cream with strawberries.


Pattycakes Bake Shop

Details: Sook Pastry offers their unique take on French pastries, breads, and chocolate. Groups can enjoy their gourmet cakes, all of which have fun names like The Ridgewood. (A chocolate sponge cake with 64% chocolate mousse and vanilla crème brûlée filling.) But their individual chocolate ganache pieces are the perfect gourmet dessert for one. They come in signature flavors such as caramel, vanilla bean, sea salt, passion fruit, raspberry and Cappuccino coffee bean.


Styertowne Bakery

Where: Clifton
Details: There’s something for everyone at Styertowne Bakery. The dessert menu has everything from chocolate covered strawberries and lemon cream mousse to pumpkin carrot squares and apple turnovers. The gourmet dessert of choice for apple lovers is their original Apple Zapple. This treat rolls chopped apple slices into dough, then fries and glazes them with powdered sugar on top. Sweet Avenue Bake Shop

Details: Sweet Avenue handles custom orders and also offers a daily menu of gourmet desserts. Their primary specialty is vegan cupcakes, which they offer in over 15 flavors. One popular pick is their Dark Side of the Moon Cupcake, a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting and confetti sprinkles. Details: BAM Desserts promises there are no cake mixes at all, as they are a scratch kitchen. BAM is a peanut-free kitchen, with eggless and vegan options as well. Even their buttercream is made in-house, without eggs or shortening. They primarily bake cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, custom cakes, and cookies. Popular cupcake flavors include Carrot Walnut, Banana Pudding, Blueberry Lemongrass, Chocolate Ganache, and Raspberry Red Velvet. We recommend the Pina Colada cupcake, a vanilla cupcake with pineapples and buttercream filling, with coconut buttercream on top. Patrons love that they can order an allergen-free custom cake, with guests never even knowing!

Details: There’s a lot going on a Blue Sheep Bake Shop. This gourmet dessert shops offers custom cakes, homemade ice cream, macarons, cupcakes, cookies, bars, and ice cream cakes. But their cute cakesicles are the perfect treat or party favor. These decorated sugar cookie cakesicles are bigger than the average cake pop, and can be customized for special occassions.


Brownie Points Bakery

Where: Summit
Details: Brownie Points Bakery makes everything completely from scratch, using real butter and Valrhona chocolate (a premium French chocolate). They sell cupcakes, banana pudding cups, muffins, pies, cookies, croissants, and of course, their signature brownies. One of their more unique gourmet desserts is the Duffin, a cross between a donut and a muffin. They are always concocting new flavors, from their Mimosa Duffin or Frosted Flake Duffin to the Pineapple Upside Down Duffin.


Chocolate in the Oven

Where: Milford
Details: This gourmet stuffed cookie company offers an inventive and indulgent rotation of flavors each week. Popular cookies include Nutter Butter, Rice Krispie, and Chocolate Caramel. Chocolate in the Oven also makes custom cakes and other treats, and fuses those flavors into their signature cookies. Patrons can order an assortment of brownies, bars, pies, tarts, cheesecakes, and even homemade candy or ice cream. But folks always come back for their variety of 20+ cookies.


House of Cupcakes

Where: East Brunswick | Princeton
Details: House of Cupcakes has two brick and mortar locations, plus a traveling food truck. Their business has been booming ever since winning the Food Network competition show, Cupcake Wars. This gourmet cupcake shop has over 35 flavors to choose from, including favorites such as Espresso Brownie and Strawberry Daiquiri. They also have truly unique choices like Worms in Dirt; a chocolate cupcake filled with chocolate icing, then rolled in cookie crunch with a gummy worm on top.


Jammin’ Crepes

Where: Princeton
Details: Jammin’ Crepes is another brick and mortar shop that also has a food truck. The name is no lie, this spot specializes in gourmet crepes for breakfast, lunch, and dessert. They source ingredients from local farms and producers whenever possible to create a menu of sweet, savory, and vegetarian crepes. Their Caramel Apple Toasty “A La Mode” is a real treat. It adds orchard spiced apples and a scoop of ice cream from the nearby Bent Spoon to their classic crepe.


Natale’s Summit Bakery

Where: Summit
Details: Natale’s is a mainstay of the Summit community, in business for over 70 years now. They offer just about every baked good under the sun, from cookies and cakes to brownies and breads. One of their unique items is the Philly Fluff, a pound cake made with Philadelphia cream cheese. Their Sicilian Cannoli is a unique take that fills a mini cream puff with ricotta cream and strawberry preserves. They then top the cream puff with even more ricotta cream and a fresh strawberry.


Sweet Melissa Patisserie

Where: Lebanon
Details: Locals call this spot the best bakery in New Jersey. We’ll save that for a different Best of list, but this spot is certainly no slouch in the dessert department. In fact, Owner Melissa Murphy even has her own recipe book, The Sweet Melissa Baking Book. This gourmet dessert shops serves everything from pies, pastries, and tarts to cookies and cakes. One of their most popular items is Melissa’s signature Double Dark Chocolate Cherry cookie. They also accept custom dessert orders.


Tamarisu Desserts

Where: Ringoes
Details: The name of this shop is a play on Tiramisu and the owner’s name, Tamara. The menu regularly introduces new cakes, mini cakes, and other gourmet treats. Their pistachio strawberry mini-cakes are popular, as are their signature cakes. Recent cakes include Blackcurrant Mousse Cake, Banana & Lime Cheesecake, and Tiramisu NJ Style. The latter is a coffee-rum sponge cake with mascarpone and blueberries inside. They also offer cake pops, cheesecake pops, cupcakes, and macaroons.


The Pastry & Coffee Room

Where: Princeton
Details: The Pastry & Coffee Room curates a dessert menu of small cakes, large cakes, eclairs, and cookies. In particular, their signature “Eclairs Special” offer gourmet options like the Pecan Vanilla Eclair and the Blueberry Cheesecake Eclair. Other fan favorite eclairs range from Dulce de Leche to Matcha or Hazelnut. Popular larger cakes include their creme brulee cake, raspberry tart, and red velvet. 502 Baking Company

Where: Brick
Details: 502 Baking Company bakes many things, but locals line up to bring home the award-winning Key Lime Pie. This fan favorite uses scratch-made graham cracker crust and real Key lime juice. They then top it with whipped cream and a lime slice. Other popular items include cheese crumb cake, salted caramel apple pie, scones, carrot cake, and peanut butter fudge pie. Those that don’t want to purchase an entire pie can order their mini key lime bites as a gourmet snack.


Antoinette Boulangerie

Where: Red Bank
Details: This boutique French boulangerie (which translates to “bakery) makes fresh cakes, croissants, macarons, and more daily. They also specialize in wedding cakes and custom catering for special occasions. Their menu consists of tarts, cookies, danishes, eclairs, creme brulee, madelines, homemade granola parfaits, and more. For a gourmet treat, try one of their Chocolate Clouds. This homemade sort-of Oreo sandwiches two chocolate cookies together with cream in the middle.


Broad Street Dough Co.

Where: Freehold | Oakhurst
Details: It’s all about the doughnut at Broad Street Dough Co. This popular spot rolls out new specials every weekend, so there’s always a new flavor to try. Some of their most popular donuts include the Cinnamon Cannoli, Lemon Drop, Chocolate PB S’mores, and Devil’s Food Cheesecake. But they also serve unique gourmet desserts like a Flintstones Key Lime Triangle, and Cha-Cha Churro Bites. We recommend the Blueberry Cheesecake donut and the Lemon Crumb Triangle.


Casciano Coffee Bar & Sweetery

Where: Hammonton
Details: This combination cafe/dessert shop makes biscotti, custard parfaits, danishes, scones, and other sweets. The menu includes rotating seasonal and specialty treats, and always offers gluten-free options. Highlights include Lemon Butter Shortbread, Blueberry Crumb Cake, and Double Chocolate Chip Pound Cake. But their PB Bomb is a true gourmet dessert. It’s a peanut butter base with chocolate mousse that Casciano finishes by dipping in chocolate ganache and peanuts.


Ce La Vi Cafe

Where: Red Bank
Details: Ce La Vi has an all-day breakfast and brunch menu, but we’re going to skip straight to dessert. They serve individual desserts such as creme brulee, tartufo, cheesecake, and Napoleon pastries as well as dessert waffles. Waffle options include Bananas Foster, Cookies and Cream, Banana Nutella Walnut, and Funfetti. But the biggest draw are their sweet crepes. They offer options such as dulce de leche, apple and chipwich, all topped with powdered sugar and whipped cream.


The Chocolate Bar

Where: Little Silver
Details: The Chocolate Bar is a specialty dessert shop that crafts hand-dipped chocolates, authentic Italian gelato, and gourmet sorbetto. Their homemade gelato comes in over 25 rotating flavors, including pistachio, Mint Oreo Blast, and Raspberry Chocolate Trifle. However, their high-end French and Belgian chocolates are the stars of the show. The indulgent options range from chocolate turtles and nine flavors of truffles to caramel marshmallows and dipped Oreo cookies.


Coney Waffle

Where: Asbury Park | Belmar | Long Branch | Red Bank
Details: Coney Waffle has locations throughout the shore and is looking to continue its expansion. They offer more than 30 variations of ice cream cakes and ice cream pies. Details: Adults feel like kids in a candy shop when they visit Douglass Candies. This ode to days gone by offers boardwalk staples like fudge, salt water taffy, caramel corn, and the Molasses Paddle. (Chewy molasses caramel dipped in dark chocolate.) Their list of gourmet chocolates includes chocolate covered caramels, chocolate covered pretzels, and their signature handcrafted Douglass Chocolate bars. They make their bars with a secret blend of decadent milk and dark chocolate.


The O.G. Creamery

Where: Ocean Gate
Details: We didn’t plan to include ice cream shops on this list (we have a whole separate list for that). But The O.G. Creamery is actually just as famous for their gourmet donuts, so they get a special mention. They offer a new menu of fresh hot donuts each week. Flavors can include anything from Strawberry Shortcake and Coconut Dream to Toasted Campfire and PB Explosion. When it’s on the menu, try the 1/2 Baked donut. It’s a combination of edible cookie dough and brownie.


Papa Ganache

Where: Manasquan | Matawan
Details: This vegan and gluten-free bakery makes waves with its popular cakes, bars, brownies, cookies, muffins, and specialty items. The massive menu features crumb cake, pecan sticky buns, cake pops, babka, apple pie pizza, cinnamon buns, and monkey bread. Specialty cakes include Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Strawberries & Cream, Rosettes, Funfetti, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. For a personal-sized gourmet dessert, try the creme brulee cupcake.

Barbara’s Chocolate on Occassion

Where: Vineland
Details: Barbara’s Chocolate on Occasion is South Jersey’s go-to spot for premier chocolate and confections. They put a unique gourmet spin on dessert favorites. For instance, they offer caramel Granny Smith apples layered with chocolate and a topping of choice. They also arrange chocolate bouquets and charcuterie boards, and can even dip wine bottles in chocolate. But our favorite is the pretzel pizza, with a pound of pretzels, custom Oreos, and custom chocolate message.


Chloe’s Cream Puffs

Where: Pitman
Details: Cream puff lovers can get their fix at Chloe’s. This family-owned dessert spot sources local ingredients to create an assortment of baked goods. The menu includes scones, croissants, muffins, cannolis, jumbo cookies, key lime pie, and caramel apple cheesecake bars. They also always create a new Parfait of the Week. But of course, their signature gourmet dessert is the cremepuff which comes in six different flavors. We recommend the classic vanilla or cookies n cream.

Details: McMillan’s boasts that they bake the best cream donuts in New Jersey. What is a cream donut? Well, it’s a donut that is sliced open like a sandwich and filled with fresh whipped cream. Besides their signature creation, they also sell danishes, sticky buns, muffins, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, chocolate bismarks, and traditional donuts. Their classic powdered sugar cream donut is a must-try, but they also have flavors like chocolate frosted.


Sugared by Sha

Where: Clarksboro
Details: Sugared curates a concise menu of cupcakes, cookies, mini cheesecakes, bundt cakes, and custom cakes. They are also expanding to feature brownies in the near future. But their signature creations are their gourmet cupcakes, which they offer in eight different flavors. Popular picks include Lemon Blossom, Vanilla Bean Dream, Cookies + Cream, and Fete. The latter is vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles baked in, topped with vanilla frosting and more rainbow sprinkles.

Details: The Candy Jar offers chocolates, candy (of course), and special occasion desserts. Their candy selection includes LEGO candies, gummy worms, raspberry rings, Swedish fish, Smarties, and sour patch pieces in various flavors. As for chocolate treats, they have chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate jars, chocolate boxes, and even sugar-free chocolate. Their signature gourmet dessert, however, is their special Red Velvet Hot Chocolate Bomb. (Just add steamed milk and stir.)

Details: The Supreme Sweets Dessert Shop offers classic dessert options. This includes apple turnovers, brownies, cupcakes, puddings, specialty cakes, cheesecakes, and even squash pies.
