The name Neguess is a Haitian Creole term dating back to the Haitian revolution; it means a fierce, strong, intellectual, and well-rounded female warrior. One who stands behind her word, which is never broken, and is equal parts celebrated, revered, and somewhat feared. So it’s no surprise that Neguess Creole is a woman-owned business.
Jessica Gourdet owns Neguess Creole with her mother, Marie, and runs the business aspect. The new restaurant in Vauxhall promises the best Haitian food around. “Know that we don’t play any games when it comes to our promise,” Jessica assures.

Neguess Creole Serves Authentic Haitian Food
The 1,870-square foot eatery replaces Church’s Kitchen. Though they are currently takeout and delivery only, they’ll be able to seat 25 to 30 guests indoors soon; after some renovations that will expand the space. “We painted the establishment to reflect the beautiful, bright, colorful buildings one can expect to see in the Caribbean,” says Jessica. “We’ve also adorned the walls with paintings by Haitian artists that reflect the rich history of our country.”
Meanwhile, Haitian native Marie crafts the cuisine. She attended a prestigious culinary institute in Haiti in her 20s. “When Marie first ventured to the United States, she cooked out of our home and sold food to neighborhood families; who were mostly from Haiti or other parts of the Caribbean,” says Jessica, born and raised in New Jersey.
Since those early days, Marie has dreamed of opening a restaurant. Her goal at Neguess Creole is to give locals the chance to taste true Haitian food. “She takes her time with every meal and specializes in presentation, even for all to-go orders,” Jessica says. Of course, it’s also about taste for the chef, too. Maria makes sure the food is fresh and “that the aroma is mouthwatering. If your food is garnished with fresh thyme and parsley, know that the chef has ‘authenticated’ your meal,” Jessica adds.
What’s on the Menu
At Neguess Creole, they cook Haitian fare in lighter oils without too much salt. “Our food is very natural and really flavorful,” Jessica explains. “We thoroughly clean our meat and season heavily with natural herbs and a special Haitian spice mixture. We marinate and slowly cook each meat to ensure flavor throughout. Everything is cooked to order.”
One popular dish is the traditional Haitian favorite griot (fried pork shoulder). Lalo is also a hit; this legume is made with jute leaves steamed and cooked with beef and turkey. It’s native to the northern region of Haiti, where the chef is from. They also serve traditional diri djon djon.
Vegetarians can enjoy tailor-made versions of their legumes, soups, and fried appetizers, as well as some side dishes. They don’t have a kids’ menu, but they do make special orders for children.
