Maine Artisan Cafe Serves Fresh Maine Lobster in Edgewater

There’s nothing like fresh Maine lobster. But what if you could get that very same lobster right in New Jersey? That’s exactly the purpose of Maine Artisan Cafe in Edgewater. This New England style eatery serves elevated sandwiches, soups, and salads just like you’d find in Maine.

Maine Artisan Cafe is a 600-square-foot spot with counter service and self-seating for about 12 guests. “We modeled the space after a typical eatery found in cities like Portland, Maine; or along the north Atlantic coastline,” says chef and owner Larry, who owns the cafe with his wife.

The interior boasts dramatic high ceilings with wood rafters and exposed brick. Outside, however, “a beautiful park is across from the cafe,” Larry says. “Of course, striking views of the Manhattan skyline can be found while strolling the promenade across the street.”

It’s All About The Lobster Roll

The stars of the Maine Artisan Cafe menu are the Maine lobster roll and Jonah crab roll. “Our lobster is brought in from Maine directly,” Larry says. In fact, he did extensive research on the fishing process, meeting with lobstermen and visiting docks in Maine and Massachusetts. “I have close connections in Maine and Boston, which helps ensure I’m getting the best product available.”

The lobster roll features fresh Maine lobster on a lightly and perfectly toasted brioche, split-top artisan roll; with a dab of mayo, a touch of butter, and a spritz of lemon. Larry considers himself a lobster purist, using top-notch ingredients to let the flavors and ingredients speak for themselves. “It’s really simple food done well and without a lot of mayonnaise, spices, or other detractors,” says Larry. Likewise, the Maine Jonah crab roll comes on an artisan bakery roll with a touch of mayo, lemon, and butter.

The menu also offers soups such as lobster bisque, clam chowder, and a soup of the week. In addition, you can order deli sandwiches, salads (with Gluten-free and vegetarian options), and even Maine coffee. In particular they serve Carpe Diem Coffee, which is a female-owned coffee roaster in Maine.

About the Owner

Larry is a New England native with 20 years of restaurant experience. He graduated from the hotel and restaurant management program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; and studied culinary arts in Switzerland and Greece. He says he grew up fishing and eating fresh seafood along the Massachusetts and Maine coastline.

After co-launching a lobster roll eatery in San Diego, he worked at his brother’s restaurant in Rockport, Massachusetts. Now, he’s striking out on his own. “I hope to do my family proud with my latest venture,” Larry says.
