Dock and Claw Clam Bar Comes to Beach Haven

The Dock and Claw Clam Bar in Beach Haven sets itself apart with its unique décor and atmosphere. As the name implies, the spot pays homage to clam bars of yesteryear. In fact, the interior boasts photos and maps showcasing the history of clam bars and clam and oyster beds. “It’s pretty cool décor,” says Co-owner Kevin Ketchel.

Kevin lives just a few blocks from Dock and Claw, so he bikes to work. “I love locals. They get to sit here and meet and interact with one another,” he says. They have 28 seats around their large bar and 10 seats around the windows. “Even though we are BYOB, it still has very much a bar vibe,” Kevin adds. In addition to indoor seating, their private driveway has space to seat about 20 diners outdoors.

Eat Like a Local

According to Kevin and Co-owner Steve Haggart, the 700-square foot space is meant to feel local and fun; as for the menu, Dock and Claw Clam Bar serves its own twist on classic Long Beach Island food. Despite being BYOB, they serve mixers and mocktails courtesy of Maria Massa, with flavors like fresh-squeezed Strawberry Lemonade. “We have the best bar for a BYOB anywhere on the island,” Kevin says.

Dock and Claw Exterior

The menu at Dock and Claw runs the gamut, with meat, fish, burgers, large salads, and a raw bar. Popular starters include duck wings (similar to chicken, but served with Korean BBQ sauce) and grilled oysters. However, Kevin’s favorite is the burrata and bruschetta, with tomatoes, garlic, basil, and olive oil. Of course, their raw bar is a fan favorite, with options like oysters, local clams, and chilled shrimp. Their fish tacos also fly off the shelf, as does the catch of the day; fried and paired with homemade mango/peach salsa and fresh lime aioli, then served on corn tortillas.

About the Owners

Kevin and Steve met working at Delaware Avenue Oyster House in Beach Haven 10 years ago. Steve served as head chef while Kevin ran the bar. But they always hoped to strike out on their own. First, they started a catering food truck. The truck’s success is what allows them to now own their first brick and mortar spot. “We’re at the age where it was time to switch things up and do something different,” Kevin says. Now, Dock and Claw is staffed by many former colleagues, and feels like more of a family business.
