Nigiri by Honshu Serves Upscale Omakase in Jersey City

It’s no secret that Jersey City is a hotspot for upscale dining. The popular city is also home to a sushi concept – simply called Nigiri – from the team behind Honshu. In fact, the restaurant sits in the space Honshu previously used for outdoor dining. But Owner Hiro Tetsui decided to renovate the area into a “fancy and relaxing” indoor eatery.

Nigiri overlooks Greene Street and has a view of the Freedom Tower. The versatile space can open its walls and roof during warm weather and close them in colder temperatures. Seating includes seven sushi bar seats, 12 seats at regular tables and eight seats in their lounge area.

Exotic Sushi and a Unique Dining Experience

Every dish at Nigiri is prepared by Chef Jason, whose background includes working in numerous Japanese restaurants in NYC. He also opened Honshu back in 2005. Chef Jason travels around the world and to Japan twice a year to learn about seafood and cultural foods. He takes inspiration from his travels to craft a one-of-a-kind menu for patrons.

Popular menu items include the Temaki (handroll) and omakase, where guests allow the chef to choose their meal. But the menu – and even the prices – change daily based on the availability of fresh fish and ingredients. “Indeed, Nigiri is a departure from traditional Japanese cuisine. But it embodies the trendier and more upscale side of Japanese sushi,” Hiro says. “At Nigiri, our focus is pure craftsmanship. You won’t find typical kitchen fare or a la carte nigiri. Instead, our nigiri menu dances with the seasons, with seafood selections that change frequently.”

In fact, the team is in constant collaboration with fish vendors. “What graces your plate today might be a tantalizing secret by tomorrow’s sun,” Hiro explains. That’s because they prepare a mix of fishes available year-round, including bluefin tuna, Alaskan king salmon, and Hawaiian yellowtail; as well as more exotic choices like American blowfish, Jeju’s fluke (Hirame), baby barracuda (kamasu), abalone, and sea urchin. These limited time fish come from all over, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Hokkaido, and Canada.

As for the drink menu, Nigiri shares a full bar with Honshu. They also share a certified sake adviser and beverage director, so they can offer perfect pairings for every meal.
