Ram Cafe Brings A Menu With Mass Appeal to Howell

Angela Colfer, owner of Ram Cafe, was bored of the usual fast food options in her area. So she decided to open an eatery of her own, one that offers something different for takeout. In particular, her menu provides guests with affordable gluten-free and vegan options among other classic favorites.

Colfer describes the 1,200-square-foot Ram Cafe as “clean, simple, and earthy” with cozy seating; the cafe seats 10 indoors plus another six outside on the sidewalk. Meanwhile, the menu is meant to appeal to the masses. “We have something for everyone, from burgers and wings to healthy salads,” Colfer says. The latter features house-made, gluten-free dressings. “You’ll find everything from blackened salmon and mini cheesecakes to scrambled eggs and pancakes for the kiddos,” she adds.

Menu Highlights

So far, Colfer says that the cheeseburgers, wings, and falafel salads are fan favorites. “We had no idea that falafels would be so popular!” she admits. However, her own favorite menu item is the choose-your-own option of one one main and two sides; she combines the honey balsamic chicken with roasted carrots and rice pilaf. Crispy Chicken Sandwich & Fries

In particular, Ram Cafe specializes in a number of vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian dishes. Their “Market Plates” are specials served after 4:00 pm, ranging from gluten-free Balsamic Chicken to vegetarian Vegetable Lasagna; as well as vegan options like their Beyond Meatballs and Sweet Thai Chili Tofu. All Market Plates come with a choice of two sides. The kitchen also tries to be allergy-friendly, and avoids cooking with soybean and peanut oils. Instead, they use a variety of vegetable, canola, and olive oils.

Those with a sweet tooth are in luck, too. Ram Cafe sells house-made mini cheesecakes in plain, salted caramel, and blueberry varieties.

About the Owner

Colfer has strong ties to Ramtown (within Howell Township). After moving there in 1980, she played on Howell South’s little league team and attended Ramtown School. “I was a frequent flyer biking up to Corsis for a slice,” she says. She then started working in the service industry at age 16. “Waitress, bartender, cook, hostess. You name it,” she describes. But before Ram Cafe, Colfer left New Jersey for 10 years and owned several cafes in Rhode Island. Finally, she returned to her hometown to raise her daughter.
