This NJ Photographer's Hobby is Now a Fun Career

One of New Jersey’s natives is quickly becoming a rising star in the world of photography. Bobby Lynn is the founder and photographer of Stonetown Arts, LLC; in his studio, Lynn photographs cosplay. For those who don’t know, cosplay consists of wearing costumes to portray characters from fiction, usually manga, animation and video games.
Cosplay PhotoI always had a passion for photography and superheros. While other kids were out playing sports, I was taking pictures and watching movies. If I had Netflix growing up, I probably would have never left the house,” Lynn said jokingly to Best of NJ via a phone interview. Lynn’s photography began as just a hobby. But all that changed after 9-11, when one of his pictures of the 9-11 tribute was aired by NBC news in New York and nationally on ABC’s World News Tonight. “When I saw they selected my picture, it gave me tremendous confidence.”
A few years ago during his first date with his future wife Lynne (not to be confused with Lynn, their last name), she told him that doing something you are passionate about and getting paid for it is one of the greatest gifts of life. Lynn decided right then and there he was going to pursue his passion of photography.

Cosplay PhotoIn 2015, he had the opportunity to be a photographer on the Marvel stage during New York Comic Con. He photographed the cast of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and documented the Marvel cosplay contest. “It was like being a rock star on that stage. Thousands of people were cheering and screaming every time I raised my camera. It was a dream come true for me,” he recalled. “I’ve always been fascinated with comic books and cosplay. I’ve followed my favorite artists, Alex Ross and Frank Miller, for many years”
When St. Catherine of Bologna’s Patron of the Arts Association approached Lynn to do a viewing of his work at the Ringwood Library, he jumped at the opportunity right away. Currently, his superhero/fantasy exhibit is on display there until Sept 30th. He also has a studio in Ringwood, New Jersey, where he does family portraits, fashion models, product photography and, of course, cosplay. What started out as a casual first date conversation with his then-girlfriend turned his hobby into a fun career.
