Cranky Angel Brings Spicy Fashion Styles to Jersey City

There’s a dichotomy inside every person, a balance between sweet and sour, sugar and spice. This is the concept behind the vintage store in Jersey City, Cranky Angel. Shop owner Montana Fucci always tries to put her best foot forward, even when she isn’t in the best mood.

“Cranky Angel is a safe place to express a little attitude. Originally, the name was meant to describe myself. Eventually, I realized how relatable it is for so many others,” Montana says. “Now when I see something funky, a little different, or out of the box, I’ll say ‘That’s so cranky!’ It’s the idea of being the best version of yourself with a little bit of spice.”

Spice Up Your Life

The 500-square foot Cranky Angel is “not your average vintage clothing store,” according to Montana. For instance, the custom checkout counter is made by hand with help from local Jersey City artist Macauley Norman. Patrons will notice the counter encases tiny toys from the 90s and early 2000s in resin. “It’s fun, playful, and nostalgic. It should evoke a sense of wonder and regression into childhood.”

The store boasts all sorts of 90s and Y2K tchotchkes and memorabilia. “I just want everyone to have a good time,” Montana says about Cranky Angel. “Even if it’s not something you’d wear out or plan to buy; it’s nice to be in a space where you can play and regress into childhood a little bit. I come across lots of weird and interesting things. I want people to be able to see these funny but forgotten items and rehome them.”

Gifts & Custom Redesigns

Store highlights include their gift section with many small and affordable options. They also partner with local artists to offer customization services. This includes airbrushing via Paws 21 Art, rhinestoning and studding via Sacred Profane Vintage, and crocheting via Crocheted by Court. Future plans include offering basic alterations and custom screen printing on garments.

Patrons can bring their own clothes or purchase items in-store and have them redesigned through paint, airbrush, rhinestones, etc. “You become the designer and get to take home a custom, one-of-a-kind garment,” Montana explains. Items in the Cranky Angel jewelry case include handmade jewelry from retired designer Maya Resin.

About the Owner

Montana has lived in nearly every county in New Jersey, but loves Jersey City. Prior to opening Cranky Angel, she worked at two Jersey City shops, Another Man’s Treasure and Frankie. She also studied costume design at Montclair State. “I’ve always wanted to have a store,” she says. “I couldn’t imagine it anywhere else. I considered other places but knew it could only be in Jersey City.”
