Planning the perfect wedding is a time-consuming task — for even the simplest of affairs. Trying to relay exactly what you want to a venue or planner takes time, and more often than not, you could have used that time to actually create what you want yourself. What you need are a few DIY wedding tips.
Whether you’re trying to pull off a sweeping, formal event or one that’s rustic chic, there are a few DIY wedding ideas that will not only save you money, but create a unique and memorable experience for you and your guests. If you’re not the creative, Pinterest-obsessed sort, don’t worry — we’ve done the research for you.

Program
Programs are a nice added touch to your wedding day. But paying a printer or planner to create one is also an added expense. These are easily DIY-able with fun fonts and a home printer. Think about incorporating your theme, if you have one, into your program. For example, if you’re having a fall wedding, use clip art of leaves to adorn the pages. And instead of simply stacking the programs, you can display them in a creative way — rolled up in a basket, or hung by ribbons, for example. If you need help getting started, search for fun templates online (like these program templates from Martha Stewart).
Ring Bearer Pillow
This might seem like an insignificant part of your wedding, but the ring bearer pillow can be very special. Is there a beloved family member who is unable to be there with you? Use some of their clothing to create the pillow — perhaps a lace from an heirloom gown. (It’s easy to make a pillow when you use these instructions from Instructables.) Or, use extra fabric from your wedding dress, so you have a memento from your gown in case you sell or donate your dress after the big day has passed.
Centerpieces
If you have never hired anyone to create a centerpiece for your house, then you don’t need to hire someone to do it for your wedding. A green thumb is not required to pull together 10-20 pretty tablescapes. Hand-making them means you have control over the sentiment, which will have a lot more value when you look back on your wedding pics. This can be a fun way to incorporate family, too. For example, if your new mom-in-law has a garden, ask her for some greenery to use in your centerpieces. Or if you’re having a fall wedding, use some of the fallen foliage and plant life from your new home together. And remember, no one says you have to have flowers in the center of your table. Get creative with photo collages or candy baskets!
Place Cards
If there is only one item you DIY for your wedding, make it this. Let’s face it: Place cards are a must-have at most weddings. Otherwise people just wander around looking for an empty seat. Your venue can easily write these out for you, but creating an interesting visual here will be fun. It is guaranteed to be seen by everyone — and is an easy way to get creative. If you are wine lovers, or wine is an important part of your theme, consider carving a slot in a cork to hold the card. If you’re into vintage, wooden clothespins are perfect. Looking to keep it really easy? Some twine tied into a knot around the placecard is super-sweet (and super-simple!).
Cake Topper
Cake toppers are kind of old-school, but when done right, they are an awesome addition to your big day. We-re not talking boring bride and groom statuettes. We’re talking something that tells your guests who you are. A simple polaroid of you two together is a great alternative to the standard statues. But remember, this is your chance to get really creative and whimsical. Pick something with meaning, like pinecones from your first walk together. Collect action figures? Why not use them on top? Think corny and think cake.
Aisle Runners
Aisle runners are generally an afterthought. But you should pay attention to them — because when done right, they can add amazingly personal details to your big day. Add your favorite poem or loving verses, paste printed out photos that tell the story of your relationship, leave Sharpies nearby so people can write you words of encouragement and then use it as the backdrop to your DIY wedding photo booth…. The ideas are endless.
Photo Booth
And speaking of photo booths, they are the new must-have at weddings. They are a fun way for guests to interact and create memories. Thing is, they are super expensive when you factor in the printing, backdrops, staff and more. Good news: This is totally DIY-able. Remember way back when we loved using “real” cameras? Grab one of those, a tripod, get some fun backdrops and props, and you’re all set for your own photo booth. (HGTV has some pretty easy-to-follow instructions on their site.)
