The Best of: Hoboken’s Irish Festival

On May 21, Frank Sinatra Park donned the colors of green, white and orange for an entire day of celebration of Irish culture. The Hoboken Irish Festival brought masses of patrons to the city throughout the all-day event. Local and national Irish vendors governed Frank Sinatra Drive, while festival-goers meandered through the streets, browsing through various stands.

The festival featured a number of vendors who offered Irish-themed clothing, jewelry, crafts, baked goods, toys, knick-knacks, and games. Food and drink vendors also offered authentic Irish grub, from corned beef to Guinness.

Hoboken Goes Green

The festivities were widespread throughout Frank Sinatra Park. Those not eating or visiting stands could be found hurling on the soccer field (the game, not the slang term); or feeding the hungry goats and sheep at the on-site petting zoo.

Children had a blast running from the crafts table to the animals, then back toward the games. There was even a face-painting booth set up. The moonwalk and inflatable obstacle course kept kids busy, but many took an exciting pony ride before leaving the festival.

Hoboken Irish Festival

Through all of the fun and games at the Hoboken Irish Festival, the organizers made sure that the event stayed true to its purpose of celebrating fine Irish culture. No matter where you were in Hoboken last Saturday, you could hear the melodic wailing of traditional Irish bagpipes. A number of Irish dances were performed by the talented young girls who took up the step of their ancestors, and several performances by Gold N’ Brown, A Band of Rogues, Clan Suibhne, and Colin Nisbet rounded out the afternoon.

The Hoboken Irish Festival, just one of the many cultural festivals Hoboken hosts, was a jubilant exemplification of the lively and cultivated Irish culture. From the food to the apparel to the games, Frank Sinatra Drive was flooded with vigorous Irish spirit. Though St. Patrick’s Day is often the sole Irish celebration many experience, the Hoboken Irish Festival encourages its patrons to carry that same energetic spirit throughout the entire year.
