The idea behind Youssoufiani Leather Craftsmanship studio in Jersey City is simple. It started when Owner Ani Youssoufian – a self-professed handbag aficionado – learned how to make her own designer-quality handbags. Now, she wants to teach students how to do the same.
The modest 400-square-foot studio offers leather craftmanship classes for beginners and experts alike. In particular, Youssoufiani focuses on teaching students how to create custom leather goods like handbags or wallets. “Beginners can start with simple projects like wallets or small bags, while experts can take on more complex designs with advanced technique,” Ani says.

Comprehensive Courses for All Skill Levels
At Youssoufiani, students can learn the entire process from selecting the leather to stitching and finishing their own unique pieces. “It’s a small, cozy space with displays of handbags, fashion books, and colorful details,” Ani explains. “The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for sparking creativity and making people feel at home while they work on projects.”
Youssoufiani offers a variety of classes, such as their popular Card Holder course. This introduction to leather crafting is great for beginners. Likewise, they offer a three-session mini tote bag-making class for beginners. It’s also one that Ani recommends. “It’s a fantastic way for those new to leatherwork to create something functional and stylish while learning the basics.”

However, Ani’s favorite class is the beginner handbag class. “I love seeing the sense of accomplishment on students’ faces when they complete their first project. Especially those who come in with no experience,” she describes.
Already looking ahead, Ani wants to expand the selection of classes. In particular, she wants to add more advanced courses and weekend workshops. Youssoufiani is also looking to start a custom handbag service, where clients can design and preorder their own unique pieces. Finally, Ani hopes to soon host events and collaborate with local artisans.
About Youssoufiani
Ani has lived in Jersey City for the past two years. She loves that the studio is located next to the Grove Street PATH station. “The easy commute makes it convenient for both locals and people coming from nearby areas. Which is one reason I chose to open my studio here,” she says.

Prior to opening Youssoufiani, Ani took courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology focused on handbags. This gave her a foundation in design and craftsmanship. She also completed a summer course in Milan, Italy, where she learned about designing a handbag collection. “I opened this shop to share my passion for leather craftsmanship with others,” Ani explains. She also wants to “create a community space where people can learn new skills, express their creativity, and make something truly their own.”
