Tie dye is a fun way to express creativity using unique color patterns. Though tie dye items are available to purchase off the rack in retail stores, there’s also an exciting alternative; thanks to Tipsy Tie Dye in Hoboken, anyone can create their own patterns in store or at home. They host both open and private tie-dyeing parties, as well as sell DIY take-home kits.
Tipsy Tie Dye is not a formal class. Rather, it’s an interactive, lively party where guests have fun while making their own tie-dye styles. Owners – and siblings – Katie and Kevin Tague aim to “foster a fun experience that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity”. They instruct participants throughout the event, showing off basic to intermediate tie-dyeing methods that any age can follow.

How it Works
Tipsy Tie Dye reflects today’s modern tie dye methods. For instance, their Dye Bar features dispenser-style tap handles that guests use to mix and create colors. They offer two-hour booking windows for their open events. These sessions, such as “Tipsy Tie Dye” and “Teeny Tie Dye”, have limited spaces, but are open to walk ins. (Katie recommends Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons for walk ins.) All ages are welcome until 5:00 pm; after that, they host adult-only events from 5:30 pm – 10:00 pm. Katie says these later sessions are great for “a night out with friends, a special celebration, or date night”.
All events have both a basic and premium package. The basic package includes choices of dyeable merchandise, help with tie dyeing, and use of their dye-dispenser. The premium package adds a souvenir tie dye silicone cup to either take home or use as a party favor. There are also separate pricing options for customers who want to dye their own goods.
More About Tipsy Tie Dye
Tipsy Tie Dye sells an array of dyeable merchandise. They regularly offer sweatshirts, sweatpants, T-shirts, hoodies, and cropped hoodies (the number-one seller, Katie says). Other items include towels, masks, scrunchies, bandanas, and baby onesies, as well as dog outfits. Seasonal merchandise like winter hats is also available.
As for the “Tipsy” in Tipsy Tie Dye, participants can BYO wine, beer, or liquor. They also allow food, but keep in mind it is a shared space unless booking a private party. The venue has plates, silverware, bar napkins, and ice on hand, in addition to bottle openers and wine keys.
About the Owners
Katie comes from the fashion world as a creative director and denim designer. Kevin is an analytical chemist specializing in garment finishing and dye science. “We both have different skill sets,” Katie says. “We’re stronger together. We are lucky to be the kind of siblings who drive each other to be better; in addition to driving each other crazy,” Katie says with a laugh. “All sibling jokes aside, we really are a great team.”
After teaching employees at corporate events how to tie dye their goods, the light bulb went off. “Why not make tie dye a social thing after hours?” she asked herself. At first, Katie and Kevin hosted pop-up tie-dye events at bars and restaurants. As people became more interested, they knew they were on to something. Now, Tipsy Tie Dye is “nonstop busy” and Katie is already thinking about the future. She hopes they can either franchise or open multiple locations. “I love that we’ve created such a fun place that people want to be,” Katie says.
