Though Hoboken seemed like a bustling city that had everything a person could shop for, Gary Goldsmith disagreed. That is, until he opened The Collective, an art dealer that exclusively sells locally made art and handmade goods.
The Collective currently curates goods from over 15 local artists, with the space to accommodate up to 40 artists simultaneously. Their selection includes everything from paintings, candles, and pottery to wood carvings, stone sculptures, wine stoppers, and more. They even have functional art-like coasters. “The Collective has a warm, eclectic vibe that feels like a mix between an artist’s studio and your coolest friend’s apartment,” Gary says.

Art for All
“We wanted to create the kind of space we were always looking for but couldn’t find. One that celebrates local talent, makes creativity accessible, and brings people together. As artists and makers ourselves, we saw how hard it was to get visibility beyond Etsy shops and weekend markets. The Collective is a space where art can live, be discovered, and be experienced—whether you’re shopping, learning, or creating something custom,” Gary explains.
At The Collective, every item is made by a local artist. “We’re not just selling products. We’re telling stories, supporting dreams, and building a creative community,” Gary says. “You won’t find mass-produced goods or generic gifts here. Instead, you’ll discover one-of-a-kind pieces made with intention and soul.”

They also have over 1,500 new and used vinyl for sale. Gary himself had around 1,800 albums in his personal collection. In fact, the Collective has a music room filled with vinyl and art made from repurposed vinyl like clocks, bowls, bookends, and bookshelves.
Custom Hats
Besides one-of-a-kind art, The Collective is home toHoboken’s first custom hat bar. The shop features over 50 styles of caps that can be personalized with 2,000-plus patches, pins, and charms. They have trucker hats, “dad hats,” flat brim hats, and athletic hats in nearly 20 colors. For those looking for something special, they offer wide-brim hat customization using feathers, vintage brooches, fabrics, buckles, and more. These hats are made from 100% Australian wool under their in-house brand, Sanglier. They can even be custom engraved and branded for a one-of-a-kind piece.
The Collective aims to be more than a shop, it’s an experience. “Whether you’re here to find a meaningful gift, make a custom hat, or just soak in the creativity, The Collective is where art and community come together,” Gary says.

About The Collective
Future plans include expanding art class offerings with beginner-friendly workshops, advanced sessions, and courses. “We want to create a space where people of all ages and experience levels can learn directly from local makers.”
The Collective is also taking their hat bar on the road. Their goal is to bring the custom hat-making experience to weddings, backyard parties, corporate events, and private celebrations. “We want it to be anywhere people want to add something hands-on, creative, and unforgettable,” Gary says.
