NJ Trunk or Treat Guide: Best Bets Near You!

The dancing skeleton minivan is passing out Hershey bars. The Charlie Brown Honda has Halloween loot bags. There are Minions over at the Jeep Wrangler handing out Jack-Be-Little pumpkins. For millions of children across New Jersey, traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating has been replaced by community-sponsored trunk or treat events. But so long as the candy stays delicious, and the fruit “treats” keep their distance, the kids don’t seem to mind.

What is a trunk or treat? Also known as Halloween tailgating or trunk and treat, the trunk or treat phenomenon has become increasingly popular here in the Garden State. Trunk or treat is getting candy and other goodies from local families out of the trunk of some elaborately decorated cars and trucks. It sounds very strange, I know, but once you go to one, you’ll be seriously hooked. These Halloween car shows are often held at local churches, community centers, schools, theatres, parks and even farms. The kiddies, usually under age 13, can get a major stash of candy in a safe environment. There is no strange neighborhood to navigate in the dark, and kids don’t need to wander far.
