Urban Skewers Brings Chinese Street-Style Skewers to Hoboken

Sometimes, a great meal doesn’t come from a restaurant. It comes from a food truck parked outside the soccer field on Frank Sinatra Drive in Hoboken. That’s where patrons will find Urban Skewers, a spot serving Chinese skewer barbecue right near Stevens Institute of Technology.

“This is a popular park area, making it a perfect spot for a food truck,” says Co-Founder John Zu. Urban Skewers focuses on fresh, quality meats and vegetables, seasoned and grilled without heavy sauces or oils. Food is never frozen, sourced daily, and cut in house to ensure the skewer is tender, juicy, and flavorful. In addition, they prepare everything by hand to ensure maximum freshness and flavor. “Our goal is to deliver the nostalgic flavors of classic night markets with a healthier, cleaner twist,” John explains.

Signature items from Urban Skewers include lamb skewers, chicken skewers, and beef bulgogi skewers. They also offer skewer-and-rice combos, for an even more filling meal. For John, his favorites are the New Orleans chicken skewer, Chinese lamb skewer, and traditional beef skewer. “They showcase the creativity and heart behind Urban Skewers,” he says.

Beef Skewers

In fact, John believes the Chinese lamb and beef skewers represent the soul of traditional Chinese street barbecue. They are simply seasoned, grilled over open flames, and bursting with bold, smoky flavor. Meanwhile, the New Orleans chicken skewer brings a Chinese-style take on a classic New Orleans flavor. It’s sweet, savory, and richly marinated, delivering juicy, bold flavors.

Then there’s the Bulgogi beef skewer, an Urban Skewers creation inspired by Korean bulgogi. It features thin slices of beef marinated in a sweet and savory sauce with hints of garlic and sesame. “Together, these skewers offer a unique fusion of traditional street barbecue with exciting international flavors. It’s a perfect blend of East meets West,” John says.
