Sitting atop The MC Hotel, The Splendid Rooftop is truly unique in Montclair. It is the town’s only indoor/outdoor rooftop bar, and a high-energy gathering spot for sports fans and socialites. The indoor and outdoor dining spaces accentuate the sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and the rolling hills of Montclair.
The concept was inspired by the Walt Whitman poem “Give Me the Splendid.” In it, the author reflects on the beauty, joy, and indulgence found in everyday life. That feeling shapes The Splendid Rooftop’s details, from the design and ambiance to the dining and cocktail experience. It’s also a subtle nod to Whitman’s New Jersey’s ties, having spent his final years in Camden.

A Splendid Experience
As for the bar itself, The Splendid Rooftop is a 3,000-square-foot space that can seat 75 indoors in the bar room area and 100 guests outside seasonally. Their private room, called the Gatsby Room, can accommodate 45 people and even has its own outdoor deck. The bar stands out for stylish indoor and outdoor seating, plush outdoor lounge areas, and sweeping panoramic skyline views.
“The atmosphere feels elevated yet inviting, designed for everything from golden-hour cocktails to late-night gatherings under the stars,” says Percy Rodriguez, Chief Operations Officer at Stout NYC Hospitality Group
Their menu is centered around elevated, shareable small plates and pizzas from Chef Dan Drohan. “The cuisine is approachable and playful yet refined, designed to pair effortlessly with craft cocktails, wine, and lively conversation,” says Percy.

Current menu favorites include the Pizza Rossa and decadent Deviled Eggs served with golden caviar (Percy’s favorite dish). Seasonal updates will feature dishes including caviar, mini lobster rolls, and more.
Of course, the drinks are just as important as the food at The Splendid Rooftop. Many of their offerings come from some local breweries like 902 Brewing and Hoboken Brewing IPA. Popular cocktails include Lychee Cosmo (vodka, lychee, cranberry, vermouth) and The MC Margarita (mala vida blanco tequila, lime, and agave). But Percy says to try the espresso martini, declaring it the best in town.
