The Best Fall Wine Events in New Jersey

New Jersey is well known for its tomatoes, white corn, peaches, and cranberries, but there’s even more to love in the Garden State. Specifically, wine (and wine events). New Jersey’s vineyards are producing a delicious variety of quality wines each season and fall is the perfect time to celebrate with a visit to the beautiful wineries located throughout the state.

New Jersey has three federally designated American Viticultural Areas. The Outer Coastal Plain in the southern half of the state, Central Delaware Valley, just north of Trenton and the  Warren Hills area in Warren County. All have specific climate, terrain, soil and conditions ideal for wine grape growing.

According to Sergio Neri, master vintner and founder of Hopewell Valley Vineyards, New Jersey is actually the ideal climate and terrain for certain varietals.

“As far as the weather conditions, New Jersey vineyards have a relatively short growing season (from May to the end of September) that makes it difficult for certain red wine varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon, to properly mature on a consistent annual basis,” explains Neri.

What does grow well?

According to Neri, “White wines are usually more adept for NJ weather. And I’d say Chardonnay, in particular, is one of the best grape varietals for making New Jersey wine. Chardonnay is ideal for New Jersey vineyards of the European vinifera varieties.”

wine events, fall wine events“Two other excellent grape varietals for white wine in New Jersey viticulture include Vidal and Trambinet, which you’ll find even up in the Finger Lakes, a renowned region to explore the delicious expressions of East Coast wines.”

If you are a fan of red wine, New Jersey is ideal for the growth and production of Chambourcin, a French hybrid that produces a fruit-forward wine.

With more than 50 wineries, New Jersey wines are becoming a local favorite for East Coast residents and many are winning awards at major competitions.

Fall is the ideal time to sample New Jersey wines and visit vineyards celebrating the harvest with open-to-the-public events. Here are a few to put on your calendar.
