Pita Bowl Brings Greek Eats & Island Vibes to Nutley

The original idea for Pita Bowl was a food truck. But after the truck’s major success, demand pushed owner Berna C. Evangelou to open a brick-and-mortar location. Now, the business brings authentic, modern Greek street food to Nutley.

The 1,750-square foot eatery seats 35 guests inside. The design “is modern, eclectic, and some of our decorations are from Greece,” Berna – A Nutley native – says. Meanwhile, Pita Bowl has an outdoor patio with a “Greek island vibe” that seats up to 20.

Going Greek

The menu features authentic Greek favorites like gyro, spinach pie (also known as spanakopita), and falafel. In addition, Pita Bowl offers vegan and gluten-free choices. However, their most popular menu items are the gyro or vegan bowls, also known as pita bowls. These pita bowls are a signature item of the food truck as well. Besides the gyro or vegan filling, they include rice, lettuce, tomato, onion, pita bread, and either tzatziki or vegan hummus.

Likewise, other popular items include the spinach and artichoke balls, and cheese balls. The former includes five spinach and artichoke balls that are lightly fried and served with hummus. Of course, the Greek salad is also a menu staple. The salad includes local lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, stuffed grape leaves, and feta with in-house balsamic and olive oil.

Greek Burger

But Berna says her favorite menu items are the beef and lamb gyro bowl, and chicken souvlaki pita or bowl. Because of their food truck origins, Pita Bowl also offers American classics like burgers and French fries. In fact, they make a unique Greek burger that Berna loves. This burger is a half-pound beef patty with tzatziki, feta, and tomatoes on a brioche bun.

Still Trucking

The Pita Bowl food truck is still around, and frequently parks at Pier 13 in Hoboken. Both the truck and restaurant also offer catering. Patrons can hire the truck for corporate events, or have food plated tray style from the restaurant for parties. Beyond their current offerings, the business plans to expand into other New Jersey towns in the future.
