Handroll House Brings Made-to-Order Sushi to East Rutherford

The first and only fully dedicated handroll house in New Jersey is now open in East Rutherford. Aptly named Handroll House, the eatery focuses on made-to-order sushi and fresh seafood in a casual, fun, environment. The restaurant comes from the same team behind the nearby Butterfish Sushi.

The high-energy concept features pristine fish with seasoned rice, crisp nori, and bold sauces prepared with Michelin-level craftsmanship. Whereas Butterfish was created for premium fish, omakase-style dining, and a refined sushi experience, “Handroll House was created as a more casual, accessible extension of that same attention to quality, focused on handrolls, takeout, and a fun neighborhood dining experience,” says Sherif Salib, owner.

Handing Out Signature Rolls

Handrolls are of course the standout items here, offering special handrolls and signature sets that are premium but approachable. Handroll House also offers items designed for sharing, takeout, and groups. Menu highlights include the Black Cod Avocado, a signature spicy tuna handroll.

Likewise, to-go menu favorites include the Tokyo Crown (spicy tuna and cucumber on the inside topped with tuna, thin-sliced lemon, and sesame seeds) and ceviche (shrimp tempura and avocado on the outside topped with yellowtail and tagorashi and scallions) rolls. “You can’t find them anywhere else,” Sherif says of the unique rolls and flavor profiles.

Dinner Seating

Sherif’s favorite handrolls are the Yuzu Yellowtail (yellowtail coated in a smooth, creamy yuzu sauce); and the Spicy Miso Glazed Salmon w/ Crispy RicePuff (salmon brought in daily from Norway with a homemade miso glaze). “They really represent what Handroll House is about—simple, fresh ingredients, great texture, and bold flavor in one bite.”

About the Restaurant

The 2,000-square-foot Handroll House can seat about 36 diners at full capacity. “The vibe is modern, warm, and energetic,” says Sherif. “We went for a polished handroll bar with a casual feel. The space has a Japanese-inspired look with a lively atmosphere, designed to feel upscale but approachable.”

One such approachable item is their Butter Bird. It’s their take on the Japanese fried chicken sandwich. This crispy, juicy chicken sandwich is marinated and fried to a crisp. It can be ordered with Kewpie mayo, a sprinkle of their house-made furikake, or with their signature spicy Butter Bird sauce. “It’s a Happy Meal of sorts for the non-sushi eaters,” says Sherif.

Coming soon, Handroll House will launch an app and rewards program. They also plan to expand the menu and offer lunch specials in the near future.
