It’s finally fall! It’s that time of year when folks across New Jersey can indulge in all things pumpkin. From lattes and desserts to unique pumpkin-flavored specialties, New Jersey eateries are breaking out their best pumpkin recipes to welcome the start of Autumn. So break out the jackets, check out the changing leaves and take a bite out of fall with one of these delicious pumpkin treats.
Start your day with a yummy cup of pumpkin-flavored coffee. Sure, you could head to your local Starbucks for their famous Pumpkin Spiced Latte. But why not try an autumn blend from one of New Jersey’s independently-owned coffee shops instead? Rook Coffee, with locations throughout Monmouth County, features both a hot and cold “pumpkin style” brew. Each cup is made to order, so you can request the amount of pumpkin flavor you like. Red Bank’s Coffee Corral welcomes fall with its delicious Autumn Brew, as well as a variety of espresso-based drinks flavored with pumpkin spice.
Indulge in some rich pumpkin pancakes for a delicious breakfast treat. New Jersey has plenty of great breakfast destinations that offer the season’s best flavor on their menus. Shea’s Café and Bakery, located in Galloway, boasts a heaping plate of Cinnamon Pumpkin Pancakes. This popular restaurant has been honored with The Press of Atlantic City‘s “Best Breakfast Gold” award for the last seven years. Another awesome breakfast spot is Ridgewood’s Country Pancake House, which serves over 100 varieties of pancakes. Their Halloween Feast pancakes, featuring pumpkin and spices, are a local favorite.
Nothing is more satisfying on a cool autumn day than warming up with a hot bowl of pumpkin soup. Così Restaurant, with multiple locations throughout the state, offers a Chipotle Pumpkin Soup perfect for the season. The recipe blends sweet potatoes, pumpkin and caramelized butternut squash with just a hint of chipotle pepper. Simply Soups and a Little More, a small café style soup shop located in Audobon, features a Creamy Pumpkin Soup on Mondays and Turkey, Pumpkin & Wild Rice Soup on Wednesdays. Yum!
This time of year, the state’s best Italian restaurants and markets incorporate fall flavors into their menus with amazing results. La Mezzaluna in downtown Princeton serves scrumptious Pumpkin Ravioli that are bursting with the flavors of squash, coriander cream and fresh sage brown butter. Flemington’s Two Bros Ravioli brings the tastes of Italy to New Jersey. They make fresh ravioli in over 25 different flavors, including pumpkin, roasted pepper and artichoke. Pastosa Ravioli, with locations in Cranford and Manalapan, is another great spot for both pumpkin and butternut squash varieties.
Fall means football, and football means beer! One of the best things about autumn is the abundance of pumpkin-flavored beers that are available. Tun Tavern, Atlantic City’s only restaurant/brewery, always has a variety of beer available on tap. Try their Pumpkin Spice Ale for a special fall treat. Another option for pumpkin beer lovers? Stop by Ewing’s River Horse Brewing Company for a weekend tour. You’ll sample a variety of seasonal beers, including the bold Hipp-O-Lantern Imperial Pumpkin Ale, brewed with pumpkin and molasses.
Of course, we can’t talk about pumpkin without mentioning the state’s best pumpkin pie destinations. Mr. Tod’s Pie Factory in Englewood features a delicious Pumpkin Pie from October through December. This popular spot specializes in pies and other homemade goodies baked with all-natural ingredients. Colts Neck’s Delicious Orchards makes their pumpkin pies from scratch every morning. Known for its fabulous fall treats, the country market uses an original 50-year-old recipe. The Pie Store, located in Upper Montclair, sells both small and large pumpkin pies. The shop, which offers British desserts and groceries, also makes mouth-watering Pumpkin Pie Scones.

Every fall, The Bent Spoon in Princeton creates batches of its Pumpkin Ice Cream, made from organic New Jersey pumpkins. Cliff’s Homemade Ice Cream, located in Ledgewood, also serves up pumpkin pie ice cream, as well as a pumpkin-flavored soft serve. For delicious pumpkin cakes and cupcakes, stop by The Able Baker in Maplewood. The pastries at this delightful bakery are all made from scratch and can be special ordered to suit your needs. And don’t miss the incredible Pumpkin Pie Crepes served at Red Bank’s Whipped Creperie and the Pumpkin Bread Pudding at Anthony David’s in Hoboken.
