Craft Show: Walking Through A Gingerbread Wonderland

If you’re looking for a sweet way to celebrate the wonder of the season, be sure to visit Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s 24th Annual Gingerbread Wonderland and Craft Show. Located in Morris Township, this year’s exhibit features 179 elaborate, edible creations. From traditional houses and cabins to lavish castles and even high-tech gadgets, the show is a family-friendly treat for all ages.

Entries were submitted by scout troops, schools, families, and individuals, with many taking this year’s “Green” theme to heart. Gardens, campsites, and even a solar-powered lighthouse were on display, marked with a special green ribbon as a token of the arboretum’s appreciation for focusing on the natural world.

Looks Good Enough to Eat

A preview evening was offered to arboretum members; many of whom remarked on the sweet aroma that filled the spacious hall housing such clever confections. Onlookers oohed and aahed at the works, some of which took upwards of 100 hours to design and build. Before exiting, visitors are encouraged to vote on their favorite; a challenging task, as it’s nearly impossible to choose among the many masterpieces.

All that gingerbread is bound to make guests hungry for a treat. With that in mind, the Wonderland Cafe located on the arboretum’s lower level offers snacks and drinks. Holiday shoppers can pay a visit to the Wonderland Craft Show where artisans offer a unique selection of handcrafted gifts. Different crafters are scheduled to set up shop each weekend.

The Gingerbread Wonderland and Craft Show holiday exhibit is open daily from 10 am to 4:30 pm, Dec. 4 through Dec. 13. It remains open until 7:30 pm on Fridays, and is open on weekends.

Visitors who leave inspired to try their hand at the delicious past-time can find a gingerbread recipe on the arboretum’s website. Be sure to stop by the Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s website for more information.
