With fall already here and winter fast-approaching, most of us will be spending a lot more time indoors. So why not make our homes as warm and inviting as possible? If you’re considering doing a little redecorating but don’t know what’s in style for the coming months, you’ve come to the right place for fall home decor.
We spoke to some of New Jersey’s best interior designers, who shared their suggestions for creating a space that’s cozy yet sophisticated, all while showcasing the season’s most attractive trends. Kerri Pilchik and Kristina Phillips of the Ridegwood, NJ-based K+K Interior Design note that fall’s interiors become warmer in tone, and incorporate more texture, pattern and unique materials.

You’ll Fall for these Autumn Trends
“Grey is making way for browns and ivories, and patterns are returning to classics such as florals, plaids and geometric ’70’s prints — but all used in a fresh and modern way,” Pilchik notes. “Gold and brass finishes are still playing a big role, along with more matte finishes such as black iron, antique brass and copper. Other materials making a resurgence this fall are burl wood and leather.”
Wondering how to pair these elements? The experts recommend using the new geometric patterns in big, bold ways.
“A textured wool rug repeats the pattern in the draperies and chinoiserie accents add more interest and pattern. If that is too much for you, use just a touch of pattern in throw pillows on a sofa, or a cozy throw,” Pilchik explains.
Even small, simple changes can make an eye-catching difference, the designers note. For example, switch out your old hooks or curtain rods and replace them with gorgeous brass and lucite hardware.
It’s All About the Smooth Transition
Designer Emily Wallach agrees. “Transitioning summer to fall, and fall to winter, for me calls for some fun pops of color and a little sparkle,” she says. “The best way to breathe some new life into a room will be with lighting, accessories and art.”
When it comes to lighting, Wallach isn’t afraid to make daring selections to create a little ambiance. “Try a larger fixture that hangs a bit lower, this becomes very glamorous, mood lighting,” she suggests.
This season, focus on mixing metals such as rose gold and silver. silver and gold or bronze and pewter, Wallach suggests.
“Let’s not forget those walls,” the designer says. “Art will always evoke emotion in a space. These days I am loving upscale street art in vibrant colors, neons and primaries. Try a room with a simple palette, mixed metal accents, a vibrant piece of art on the wall and a large low light fixture over a table.”
If you’re looking for more inspiration when it comes to fall home decor, the work of these designers will be on view at the Showhouse for Heroes in Saddle River, NJ beginning September 29, 2016.
