Asante’s Restaurant Brings African Flavors to Bergen County

The town of Teaneck is now home to Asante’s Restaurant, a new eatery offering authentic African flavors at affordable prices. In particular, this fast casual and friendly spot pays homage to Africa’s food culture through homemade African dishes. Though they specialize in Ghanian cuisine, the menu has plenty of options for everyone.

The 1,500-square foot Asante’s Restaurant shares a space with Ed’s African and Caribbean Market. This allows patrons to shop for fresh produce either before or after their meal; and also allows the restaurant to source some of their ingredients from literally next door. Owner Edward Asante, a longtime Bergen County resident, has a clear purpose for opening the restaurant. He wanted to “meet customers’ demand and craving for Ghanian dishes.”

Homestyle Meals & More

The menu emphasizes homestyle cooking with a focus on Ghanian dishes. For the most part, they source ingredients from wholesalers, both locally and internationally. However, some products come from the adjoining Ed’s Market, including many of their proteins. In fact, many of their seafood, sliders, and mac and cheese dishes include ingredients from Ed’s Market. Overall, Asante’s Restaurant features “flavorful, well-seasoned, and spicy food,” according to Edward. Popular items include Jollof, which is a rice dish with a choice of fried fish, grilled chicken, or grilled tilapia; as well as Fufu, a dough-like food with spicy pepper soup. Meanwhile, they offer entrees like grilled fish and ribeye, along with sides such as fried plantains. For a real taste of Ghana, they offer hausa koko, a spicy corn millet porridge, as well as Ebunubunu; a Ghanian soup made with cocoyam leaves and either meat or fish.
