The 5 Best Summer Makeup Trends

Makeup is all about reinventing yourself, and this season’s beauty trends are no exception to the rule. Whether you’ve been wearing the same lipstick since the late nineties or you change eyeliners as often as you change clothes, finding a look that works for you has never been easier.

“In winter and fall, people kind of get into a routine of doing the same thing over and over,” says Eva Gerapetritis, owner of Make Me Up Eva, a mobile makeup company in Belmar. “When summer comes, you’re getting tan so you don’t need as much makeup to cover your face. It gets you out of your winter funk, so you’re more willing to experiment with different looks.”

From faux freckles to colored eyeliner, this summer is all about having a sense of adventure. But you don’t need to hire a professional makeup artist to replicate these looks at home. Here are Gerapetritis’s top 5 tips for summer makeup.

Fake It ‘Til You Make It

freckles“A lot of girls are trying faux freckles this year. What you do is you take your foundation and do it as normal. Then take an eyeliner pencil close to your hair color and create little dots on your cheekbones and down the nose. It gives you that sun-kissed look of freckles without ruining your skin. It’s definitely not for everyone but it was on the runway. You just put a couple of dots on your face and you’re good to go.”

Go Au Natural

“Take a nude or cream eyeliner. It can be any brand. It can be a pencil or a stick as long as it’s creamy. Put the eyeliner in your waterline, which is the inner part of your eyelash that’s connected to your eye. What that does is make the eye appear bigger. Then put beige shadow underneath your eye to make the nude even brighter. It makes your eyes look open, doe-eyed and pretty for summer. You just have to put mascara on and you have an eye that looks totally finished.”

The Bold and The Beautiful

“For summer, everyone thinks bright, hot pink, orange and red. Now people are doing dark and light. This winter and fall, everyone wanted dark brown lips like Kylie Jenner. A lot of people are still going crazy for that, but you can do any color. It doesn’t necessarily have to be bright. It can also be dark. You just want to add a pop of color.”

Dewy Skin

summer makeup“Highlighters are the makeup item of the year. Every brand has come out with a highlighter. You just take a brush and dip into the highlighter and highlight the top of your cheekbones, down your nose, on your forehead. It brings a lot of light to your face and gives it a nice, dewy glow. Everyone wants that highlighted bronze look. If you aren’t already bronze, just get a bronzer and put it on your forehead, down your cheekbone and along your chin in a 3-motion. Then highlight the perimeter of your face so you have some dimension.”

Eye on the Prize

“Colored eyeliner is really in this summer. I’ve seen yellow. I’ve seen pink. That’s more extreme. The average daytime colored eyeliner would be blue, purple, hunter green. You could do champagne or bronze. It’s all about adding simple touches to make your makeup routine to make it fresh and easy for summer.”
