#Sinatra100: Celebrating the Music Legend

Frank Sinatra is a name that is synonymous with music. The American jazz and traditional pop singer, who was also no stranger to acting and producing, would be celebrating his 100th birthday this week if he were still alive. Though the influential legend is no longer among us, he and his incredible music live on in our hearts and minds every time we hum a tune from one of his records, of which he sold more than 150 million worldwide.

Sinatra was a New Jersey native, born in Hoboken on December 12, 1915 before traveling the country, even performing in Las Vegas as part of the Rat Pack before heading to Hollywood and picking up an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor for his work on From Here to Eternity. As a way of doing our small part in contributing to the legacy of one of the greatest musicians the world has ever known, Best of NJ has put together some features and events to help NJ residents celebrate #Sinatra100. Take look!

Essential Frank Sinatra Performances (You Might Not Know) – Francis Albert Sinatra celebrates the century mark this Saturday. The late Grammy and Oscar winner — who died in 1998 after suffering a heart attack — introduced the world to an America where rats traveled in packs, and ladies were tramps, with both camps regularly convening over a smoke in one hand and a glass of whiskey (poured neat, with messy results) in the other.

Here at Best of NJ, while we like Frank for not doing it society’s way, but rather — hmm, how does that song go again? — we absolutely love him for being the skinny son of a boxer- turned-saloon-owner, born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey. Through the years, we all came to know his iconic, signature tunes: “Strangers in the Night,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “My Way,” and so on, but there’s a lot more to Sinatra’s legacy than just the hits.

Frank Sinatra’s Hoboken Haunts (That Still Exist) – On December 12, 1915, in a cold-water flat in Hoboken, a young Italian woman gave birth to a little baby boy with the most beautiful blue eyes the world would ever see. And his voice didn’t turn out to be too shabby, either. Frank Sinatra’s pipes went on to put both him, and the small town of Hoboken, on the map. A city of immigrants just starting out in America, Hobokenites all felt a sense of possibility in seeing Sinatra’s name in lights.

While Ol’ Blue Eyes didn’t always hold his hometown in the highest regard, a few local places drew him back to the square mile where he found his feet (and his voice). In honor of Sinatra’s 100th birthday on December 12, take a visit to New Jersey, 07030, and check out some of Sinatra’s beloved haunts.
