Harness Racing at the Meadowlands Returns November 13

The always-thrilling sport of horse racing is enjoying a resurgence thanks to Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh — and the year’s not over yet! Harness racing at the Meadowlands begins its six-week season on Friday, November 13. But what makes this year so special?

As racing enthusiasts know, the complex underwent a near-$100 million renovation when it was privatized by real estate developer Jeff Gural; Gural is a managing partner of Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment.

Justin Horowitz, media relations manager for the racetrack, says the beautiful new facility is “the crown jewel of harness racing” and not at all what you picture when you think of horse racing.

“It’s very modern, with skybox suites and a Vegas-style sports bar as well as fine dining restaurants. In the summer, visitors love our rooftop terrace with views of the Manhattan skyline on one side and the race track on the other. It’s a unique space and the best way to experience racing,” he says.

The Main (Mane?) Attraction

Getting the harness racing season off to a flying start, the TVG finals will take place on Friday, Nov. 20. Foiled Again, the richest horse in harness racing, with earnings estimated at over $7 million, will compete. His trainer, Ron Burke, says seeing this shining star, who many feel has only gotten better with age, is an event not to be missed.

Burke also recommends checking out Mission Brief, a filly who’s not afraid to “race with the boys” at the track. The 3-year-old, driven by Yannick Gingras, came in second in the Hambletonian Stakes on Aug. 8.

As if those weren’t reasons enough to come out and make a night of it at the track, Horowitz says the Meadowlands celebrates this exciting season with plenty of special events and promotions, including a Black Friday Gift Card Sweepstakes on Friday, Nov. 27 and a Holiday Gift Card Sweepstakes on Saturday, Nov. 28.

The venue offers a “unique night on the town” and a nice change of pace for families as well, Horowitz says. While the kids can’t bet, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Children and their parents are invited to ride along in the cab of the truck that guides the horses into the starting gate.
“The horses’ noses are right up against the gate. There’s no better vantage point,” says Horowitz.

Following a race, the horses return to the paddock, the equine equivalent of the locker room., where families can enjoy an up-close, behind-the-scenes tour, and even visit the horses.

Great for Kids

“It’s a real treat, especially for city kids who might not have that opportunity too often,” says Horowitz, who adds that during the summer the facility’s two-acre picnic area features bounce houses and ice cream for the kids. “All these things make it much more than a place to gamble. We do want families to come out and kids to be exposed to the sport of harness racing. If you get them started early, they’ll be fans for life.”

And speaking of children, the Meadowlands Racetrack proves its commitment to helping disadvantaged youngsters; particularly, they serve as an official Toys for Tots donation site. Patrons, horsemen, and employees are invited to contribute new, unwrapped toys beginning before the holidays.

After the donation period ends, the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects the presents; then they distribute them as holiday gifts to children in need in neighboring communities. Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment has participated in this program for years, collecting thousands of toys for children.

Holiday Parties at Meadowlands Racing

Those already in the holiday spirit searching for a unique venue to host a seasonal celebration, need look no further. Horowitz says the Meadowlands’ group sales staff can offer guidance and assistance when it comes to accommodating parties of all sizes. Whether you choose a casual gathering in the Victory Sports Bar & Club, a sit-down dinner at Pink, or a private soiree in one of six Skybox suites, you’ll be given the VIP treatment.
