How Small Businesses Are Adapting to COVID-19

Despite the real and lasting effects of COVID-19, many small businesses in New Jersey are finding ways to adapt. In particular, the melding of innovation and modern technology is playing a large role in their success. Jim Kirkos, president and CEO of the Meadowlands Chamber, knows much about this topic.

In this episode of State of Affairs with Steve Adubato, the show host speaks with Kirkos. They discuss how technology and innovation are helping small businesses survive the crisis; as well as the long-term impact of the pandemic on the small business community.

Small Businesses Must Adapt to Survive the COVID-19 Crisis

The Meadowlands Chamber helps foster local economic, community, and business growth. They have spent four decades playing many roles to achieve these goals. For instance, they engage in initiatives that concern public affairs, transportation, education, and the workforce.

Of course, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation has seen an economic downturn. However, the Meadowlands Chamber continues to provide support to local businesses, encouraging them to remain open when possible. In fact, Kirkos believes that businesses taking action right now can make a significant difference.

“I think the plight for businesses in general—and the things that we’ve been sharing with our members—is that this is not a time to stick our heads in the sand. It’s a time for really thinking creatively (and) thinking about the future,” Kirkos says. “While it’s hard to do long term, those that are proactive and are understanding, or trying to understand, the impacts of their businesses and how their businesses need to pivot and change and adapt and improvise to get through this crisis, are the ones that are going to succeed.”

Kirkos goes on to detail how modern tech tools are going to transform businesses in the new era. He states that, even when the technology itself isn’t new, we’re learning new ways to utilize it for optimal success.
