The Best Art Classes for NJ Kids

Do you have a budding Picasso in the house? Young children naturally love to draw and create. If you’re hoping to unleash the artist within your child, consider nurturing his or her creative side with a local art class. Programs are offered in various artistic areas such as drawing, pottery, watercolor and more.

Enrollment for fall sessions begins soon so now is a great time to sign up. Check out some of our favorite art classes in the state below.

art classesDetails: Kids use their imagination while working with paint, wire, clay and other materials. They explore artists, techniques, world cultures and more. Classes are offered in age groups like Twoosy Doodlers (20 months to three), Mini Doodlers (three to five) and Doodlers (six and up). In a Mini Doodlers class, children create their own masterpieces while nurturing skills needed for school like language, listening and direction following. Toddlers in Twoosy Doodlers develop sensory, fine and gross motor skills. They’ll learn about color, texture and more as they play with fun materials.

art classesDetails: This Westfield studio offers fun, creative and educational art classes for kids pre-K to 13 years old, as well as teens and adults. Enroll for a minimum of 10 weeks at a time. Kids five to 13 can take a mixed media class to give them a basic understanding of the fundamentals of shape, color, line, texture and form. They’ll create drawing, painting and sculpture projects during the session. Preschoolers ages three to five can take Pre-K Art Making where they’ll draw, paint and do a 3-D art project. Other classes include Just Drawing, Mom & Me Art Making and All 3-D.

Creative Hands

art classesDetails: Creative Hands has been offering classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and pottery for over 10 years. Classes are held once a week for one to two hours, depending on the artist’s age, in a continuous nine-week session. Don’t have that kind of time? Sign up for a Saturday afternoon workshop. In the Mommy & Me class for 3 ½ to 4 ½ year olds, you and your little one work together on projects to promote his fine motor skill development while having fun. Kindergarten Kids helps five to six year olds gain confidence as they try new techniques and make artistic choices. All classes have a limited enrollment with a maximum of 10 to 12 students per class, so early registration is recommended.

Jersey City Art School

In Mini Masterpieces, five to 12 year old students learn about artists and techniques using a variety of media to create mini masterpieces. Morning Art, Reading and Math offers a fun and gentle approach to preschool learning for the two, three and four-year-old set. Sessions include circle time, arts and crafts, play time and an introduction to phonics, literacy and math.

Kids Art Studio

For $20 a class, kids five and up can join a walk-in class on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm or 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Lakeside Art Studio

Adventures in Drawing (for ages eight to 13 years), where kids study shape, line and form. Next up is Drawing With Color, where they learn about basic color theory and design. Students can then move on to watercolor study, where they’ll discover various watercolor techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and dry-on-dry. Master Art Studio

Details: Master Art Studio welcomes creative children who want to learn about drawing and painting. And with classes limited to six to nine students, everyone gets personal attention and instruction. For younger students, parents can stay and quietly watch the class once or twice to be sure both parent and child are comfortable with the program. Young artists are encouraged to master in-depth shading, proportions and composition in pencil first. Once they’re more advanced, artists can work in color in other media.

The Messy Artist

art classesDetails: Got a little one aged 18 months to five years? Consider an Open Art Pack at this East Hanover studio. Available in packs of five, this pass lets you attend select Picasso and Monet classes, plus drop-in and play sessions throughout the semester. Picasso is a Mommy & Me class for 1.5 to 2.5 year olds. Kids play, experiment and create at five stations such as a sensory box, easel, messy table, play-dough activity and project station, with stations changing weekly. The Monet Mommy & Me class (for two to five year olds) includes station play, along with a group project.

Urban Arts at Monroe

Details: Urban Arts features an array of art classes for kids ages two and up. Toddlers (two to three years old) create colorful projects to get them ready for school by focusing on fine and gross motor skills. Pre-school children experiment with various media as they create two and three-dimensional projects. Art Exploration (four to seven years old) strengthens creativity and builds technical skills through diverse media such as pencil, pastel, charcoal, watercolor, tempera and acrylic.
