Fans of potatoes have a new home in Mt. Holly. The Humble Spud Cafe offers breakfast, lunch, and even dessert options all revolving around the unexpectedly versatile potato. This includes menu options such as loaded potatoes, potato focaccia, potato mac and cheese, and more.
The 1,600-square-foot space – previously home to Zaddy’s Roast Sandwiches – can seat 44 indoors, with outdoor seating coming 2027. The interior features an art deco style that’s focused on potatoes and nostalgia. This includes famous prints like The Potato Eaters by Van Gogh and The Potato Field by Gauguin. Carol Keefe, the chef’s wife, is a foodie and artist who did all the café’s interior design.

A Potato for Every Mood
The Humble Spud Cafe features an inventive menu that puts the spotlight on potatoes. From twice-baked potatoes and breakfast burritos to Shepherd’s pie and vegan Irish stew, ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible. Chef and Owner Desmond Keefe loves the postada (sweet potato, black beans, short rib carnitas, avocado crema, cotija cheese); and the Slippery Pig (a BBQ pulled pork slider on a potato bun with chipotle slaw and pickled red onions
Their signature loaded potatoes include a new special every week. Early favorites include the Big Easy (sausage, chicken, and shrimp gumbo); the Big D (chili, cheese, sour cream, scallions, and jalapeno); and The Big Luv (broccoli and cheese).

Of course, The Humble Spud Cafe also lets you build your own potato. It all starts with a base of baked potato, fries, sweet potato, or tots. Then a choice of topping from options like beef chili, buffalo chicken, smoked brisket, short rib carnita, or pulled pork. Finally, you can select add-ons ranging from melted butter and ranch dressing to scallions, sour cream, bacon, and broccoli.
For dessert, try the Sweet Potato Whoopie Pie. This unique treat takes cream cheese frosting and sandwiches it between two sweet potatoes pies. The Humble Spud offers Sunday brunch, and plans to introduce holiday catering options.
