The 5 Best South Jersey
Mediterranean Restaurants
Blue Fig Garden
Where: Cherry Hill
Details: Turkish and wider Mediterranean flavors combine at Blue Fig Garden (which also has a North Jersey location in Wayne). Their wide-ranging menu stretches from popular starters like falafel and cheese phyllo rolls to entrees like lamb kebab. But we recommend two entrees in particular. The first is their Old Fashioned Oven Brick Sautee, a mixture of beef, grape tomatoes, onion, pepper, and house sauce wrapped in pita. The other is their Blue Fig Signature Dish, combining chicken, beef, and adana kebabs with lamb chop and grilled vegetables.
Bosphorus Mediterranean Cuisine
Where: Glassboro
Details: This casual eatery at the Delsea Drive strip mall is an affordable option for high-quality Mediterranean meals. (It’s a particularly popular spot for students of Rowan University.) Specializing in halal Turkish cuisine, Bosphorous serves familiar favorites including gyros, kebabs, and shawarma. Not surprisingly, the most popular menu items are the chicken gyro wrap, lamb gyro wrap, and classic chicken shish kebab. But we also recommend their homemade Manti (Turkish dumplings) and traditional Lamb Hunkar Begendi.
Estia Taverna
Where: Marlton
Details: Estia is an upscale restaurant for authentic Greek dishes. The restaurant is part of a multi-generational, family owned restaurant group. The Pashalis family operates four Estia Taverna locations — the others are in Florida and Pennsylvania — as well as the Pietro’s Pizzeria brand. As for the menu, popular options include starters such as Greek meatballs, shrimp saganaki, and spanakopita. For dinner, we recommend either the lamb chops mixed seafood orzo. Or, for something different, try out their swordfish souvlaki.
Oba Mediterranean
Where: Collingswood
Details: Oba offers authentic Turkish meals in a casual setting that feels almost like visiting family for dinner. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner service, and also offers event catering. Signature dishes include the Chicken Adana, ground lamb Lahmacun (a traditional Turkish meat pie), and the Sucuklu Pide. The latter is a flatbread topped with Turkish soujouk (a spicy, fermented sausage) and mozzarella cheese. We also recommend the Shrimp Casserole or homemade lamb gyro, and Chocolate Souffle for dessert.
Thymari Mediterranean Gastro-Taverna
Where: Swedesboro
Details: Thymari is a modern Greek tavern in the heart of Swedesboro. Chef Marco Passante refined his culinary expertise training in Milan and Geneva, Switzerland. He uses his experience to delicately balance a fusion of flavors most Mediterranean restaurants wouldn’t consider. There’s no better way to experience his unique creations than by visiting Thymari any time Friday through Sunday. This is when Chef Marco presents his latest weekly Chef Specials. Before diving into an entree, we recommend the Octopus over Fava and Tiropitakia.
