Buon Appetito, Bergen County! The new Sonny T restaurant and bar in River Edge serves up Southern Italian cuisine starring family recipes and classics. Those that recall Italian restaurant Rugova will know just where to find this 2,200-square foot spot; though they won’t recognize the renovated interior which now features a modern, upscale design.
Sonny T can seat 120 guests indoors, while their outdoor dining space seats 50. They also have a large, permanent outdoor dining tent coming soon, owner Dominque Teta says. “Since opening, we’ve had a great response and a lot of positive feedback,” he tells Best of NJ.
Teta also explains that the owners are Sicilian Hackensack natives. “We saw the historic potential of the restaurant,” he says. With this in mind, they hired seasoned general manager, Theresa Wickersheim, and a kitchen team with backgrounds working at Felidia; a top Italian restaurant in New York.

Sonny T Serves a Taste of Southern Italy
One popular meal starter is the Sonny T Chopped Salad; which includes artichoke hearts, tomatoes, onions, pepperoncini, and mozzarella pearls in signature lemon garlic pearl dressing. Then, the Sonny T Sunday Dinner features nanny’s gravy with sausage, meatballs, and braciola, with either spaghetti or rigatoni. For pizza lovers, the Signature Margarita Pie comes with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil.
Meanwhile, gluten-free goers can order a gluten-free crusted pie. But keep in mind, the kitchen can’t guarantee zero cross-contamination with other products. In addition, vegetarian options include pizzas and salads, and they can always follow through on special requests. They don’t have a specific kids’ menu, but Sonny T does offer pizzas and kid-friendly pasta dishes.
Drinks and Other Details
So far, popular drinks include the Sunday Loaded Bloody Mary and the Spicy Paloma; the former comes with either meat or meat and veggies, while the latter is a tequila-based cocktail.
