San Patricios Fuses Irish Pub Classics & Mexican Street Food

It’s no secret that Jersey City is home to an eclectic mix of diverse cuisine. But San Patricios takes the melting pot theme to a new level. The restaurant serves a mix of Irish Pub classics alongside popular Mexican street food. It is a spot where, as the owners put it, “Irish heart meets Mexican soul.”

Filling the roles of both cantina and pub, San Patricios offers lunch, dinner, late-night bites, and cocktails. The restaurant comes from the team behind The Dead Rabbit in New York City; a popular bar from Managing Partner Jack McGarry and Beverage Director Aidan Bowie. With San Patricios, the team has created a love letter to the blended history of Ireland and Mexico.

Unlikely Allies

Named for St. Patrick’s Battalion, the restaurant recognizes an important time in history when Irish immigrants fled their homeland during the Great Famine. Upon arriving in America, they learned of the country’s expansion plans into Mexico during the war of 1846-1848. But Irish soldiers saw a kindred spirit in the Mexicans fighting to protect their land. So, led by John Riley, a band of Irish soldiers defected from the American army and instead fought for Mexico. This band of soldiers was known as Batallón de San Patricios (St. Patrick’s Battalian).

In the same spirit as this wartime brotherhood, the restaurant celebrates both Irish and Mexican culture. While the menu mainly features fusions in its tacos, it does showcase both traditional Irish dishes and popular Mexican cuisine. This includes a wide assortment of authentic cocktails featuring flavors from Ireland and Mexico alike.

A Taste of Ireland & Mexico

Menu highlights at San Patricios include their tacos. Pub Tacos come in options like Corned Beef, Chicken Curry, and Fish & Chips, while Cantina Tacos feature Beef Birria, Pork Pibil, and Calabraza Rostizado (black beans, guacamole, and pico de gallo). Meanwhile, their signature entrees range from Enchiladas Suiza (chicken, Tomatillo sauce, sour cream, and Oaxaca cheese) to Chicken Pot Pie.

As for cocktails, San Patricios curates a mix of Margaritas, Aqua Frescas, Citricos, Cubas, Beer, and Intensos. The latter are spirit-forward stiff drinks primarily featuring tequila, rum, or gin. Their fan-favorite margaritas take tried-and-true flavors and give them a creative twist. For example, the Los Colorados blends Ilegal Mezcal, Patrón Silver Tequila, Serrano Chili, honey, and lime.
