The word “Sakana” is a Japanese term that traditionally refers to food served with sake. It comes from the words saka (sake) and na (side dish). Typically, dried fish and salted fish roe were popular choices for these dishes. This is how, over the years, Sakana also came to mean “fish.”
SAKANA is also a 3,800-square foot Japanese sushi restaurant in New Brunswick. The space can seat 140 diners at tables which are hand carved from walnut. As for the decor, the restaurant features Amber-backlit cutouts at the base of the sushi bar. There is also a widescreen image of a Japanese woman wearing elaborate makeup and carrying a parasol in front of cherry blossoms.

Order A La Carte or AYCE
SAKANA serves contemporary Japanese cuisine, either a la carte or from an All You Can Eat menu. The restaurant uses high quality nori, premium rice, and fresh ingredients. In particular, their AYCE option is almost like a buffet with items including salads, soups, teriyaki, tempura, sashimi, and rolls. Patrons simply order as much food as they like by checking items off on a printed paper menu.
Customers will also have a unique experience when they meet “Bella,” the Premium Delivery Robot at SAKANA. Bella not only delivers food to customers, but also sings happy birthday for special occasions.
Popular menu items include avocado salad, pepper tuna (salad or appetizer), and salmon toro sashimi. However, the yellow jalapeno sushi appetizer is Manager Jaden Gao’s favorite. Their signature roll is the Sakana Roll. This five piece sushi roll wrapped in soy paper contains eel, spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, and avocado.
