NJ Food Truck Spotlight: G’Day Gourmet

Growing up in Australia and New Zealand, Founder and CEO of G’Day Gourmet Michael Peacock fondly remembers Friday school lunches. These meals were an end-of-week celebration featuring traditional meat pies served fresh and hot to the classroom. Now Michael offers his own authentic meat pies from his food truck and commercial kitchen.

Michael’s family immigrated to the US in the early 1980s. To his disappointment, he couldn’t find the meat pies of his youth anywhere. Drawn to the restaurant industry, Michael received cooking lessons from head chefs, and had a knack for making Australian dishes.

Authentic Aussie Pies

Michael launched his own food truck with a focus on meat pies in 2016. The name G’Day Gourmet takes inspiration from his aunt, who once ran a cafe on the beach in Australia. The business is a family venture, with both a traveling food truck and a commercial kitchen in Ewing. The latter allows them to ship orders nationwide.

At G’Day Gourmet, pies are made with farm-fresh fillings and organic, antibiotic-free, grass-fed Aussie meats. “The pies have a full profile of flavors,” Michael says. “The secret ingredient in our pie crust is what makes for a savory pie. People tell us we can put anything in the pie crust, and it will taste good.”

What’s on the Menu

Their two most popular pies are the beef, bacon and cheese, and lamb and rosemary. They also have steak and stout, roasted chicken, and even BBQ pulled pork. “Order your pie and it’s in your hands in less than two seconds,” Michael says about the food truck. “It’s hot and ready to eat. It’s baked right on the truck.”

Their newest pie is butter chicken, the brainchild of Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata. Jordan is a brand ambassador for G’Day Gourmet, and a fellow Australian. Michael says the flavorful pie is made with roasted dark and white meat chicken. It’s then smothered in a creamy curry sauce, which has some mild heat to it. “That with the combination of the butter dough make it a hit,” he says.

For something extra indulgent, patrons can add mashed potatoes and gravy to their meat pies. However, the true Aussie way is to add mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. The food truck also offers French fries and Australian fries (made with chicken-flavored seasoning) as side dishes.
