Cigarro Bar and Lounge Reinvents Cigar Lounges in Hackensack

The stuffy, male-centric cigar lounges of yesteryear are getting an update for modern times. Cigarro Bar and Lounge in Hackensack lets anyone enjoy premium cigars, upscale American dining, and handcrafted cocktails. But that’s not all.

The lounge is owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team of J. Carlos Gomez and Lorena Llivichuzca. Lorena sought to create a spot that felt welcoming to everyone, especially women. “I didn’t want Cigarro to feel like just another traditional, male-focused cigar lounge,” says Lorena. “I wanted it to feel sophisticated, comfortable, and inviting whether you’re a cigar enthusiast or simply accompanying someone who enjoys cigars.”

Cigarro Bar and Lounge gives patrons a place to eat, socialize, and enjoy premium cigars in a luxurious setting. Their state-of-the-art ventilation system lets guests enjoy the atmosphere without feeling overwhelmed by smoke. “Anyone who may not be a regular smoker can still enjoy the food, cocktails, music, and overall experience alongside their guests,” Lorena explains.

Drinking, Dancing, Dining, & More

According to Chef Timothy Silva, standout dishes include The Cigarro Cheeseburger.”We constantly hear guests tell us it’s the best burger they’ve had in Bergen County,” Lorena reveals. It’s made with 8-ounce brisket and short rib Pat LaFrieda beef, American cheese, and house-made Russian dressing.

Food Spread

Another hit is the linguine Maine lobster pasta that’s prepared with a white wine Sungold tomato sauce and finished with micro basil. “To me, it’s a great example of the chef’s ability to take premium ingredients and turn them into something memorable while still letting the ingredients shine,” says Lorena. Meanwhile, her favorite dish is the crispy sushi rice yellowfin tuna tartare served with smoked chili aioli and micro chives. “The combination of textures and flavors is incredible.”

Lorena describes the liquor menu as “balanced in flavor and creative, yet approachable so guests will experience things they may not normally order.” The menu mixes elevated classics, their own creations, and premium spirit-driven cocktails. Their mezcal and rum tiki-style cocktail is called Sikar. It’s Lorena’s favorite, and is garnished with a mini cigar. Her husband named it after the Mayan word ‘sikar,’ which is believed to be the origin of the word ‘cigar’. “We thought it was the perfect name for a cocktail that reflects the cigar culture at the heart of Cigarro,” says Lorena.

Weekly Special Events

Every Wednesday, Cigarro Bar and Lounge hosts Ladies’ Night, featuring 99-cent fresh Wellfleet oysters and espresso martini shots. They also have specials on wines by the glass and spritzes. In addition, all ladies get a free “Misbehavin” cocktail.

Smokey Cocktail

Similarly, Latin Thursdays start at 7:30 pm. Guests can enjoy salsa, bachata, cumbia, and Latin hits while dining, sipping handcrafted cocktails, enjoying premium cigars, and dancing.

Co-owner Juan has been involved in the cigar industry for years and also co-owns The Cigar Room. (A retail cigar shop in Fort Lee.) Lorena has worked in financial services for more than 25 years. The location was perfect because it’s one of the few places in New Jersey that allows smoking thanks to a grandfathered smoking permit.
