Comfort food doesn’t just nourish the body, it helps soothe the soul. But in order to find authentic southern comfort food, you have to head down south. To southern New Jersey, that is. Blair Mountain Biscuit Co. is a new business in Blackwood that serves biscuits (of course) and more.
How did southern cooking end up in South Jersey? Owner and chef Ted Miller, along with his wife Tori (a Washington Township native) were living in Virginia. The couple returned to Tori’s home state of New Jersey in 2019, however, they brought an idea back with them. “We thought South Jersey needed a little bit of Southern comfort food,” says Ted.

Blair Mountain Biscuit Co. features a small bar area and four tables that can seat about 20 guests. The eatery’s signature color – forest green – surrounds the interior. “The vibe is earthy, neutral, and a little bit quirky,” Ted says of the upbeat environment. For instance, the TV is set to nature videos all day. Meanwhile, their outdoor patio seats 20 at uncovered, open-air picnic tables. Both seating areas are open year-round.
Southern Comfort Biscuits & More
The menu at Blair Mountain Biscuit Co. offers modern southern comfort, fast-casual food; with an emphasis on biscuits and biscuit sandwiches. In particular, they’re known for their breakfast biscuit sandwiches, hand-cut fries, and house-made sausage. They also have vegan and gluten-free offerings. Their signature item is a cheddar and rosemary drop biscuit. Click here to see the full menu.

Ted’s favorite item is the early bird biscuit sandwich; a classic biscuit sandwich with fried chicken, pepper gravy, a fried egg, and cheddar cheese. In fact, it’s one of their most popular items for both breakfast and lunch, Ted says. “Our restaurant is takeout friendly, which is great for the time we’re living in right now,” he adds.
Southern Living
Ted was born and raised in Virginia, so he’s a southerner at heart. His previous restaurant experiences include cooking for more than 15 years. He developed his signature biscuit recipe during his time as executive chef at Bluemont Vineyard in Virginia. His cheddar rosemary drop biscuits were a quick favorite, soon becoming his specialty.
Blair Mountain Biscuit Co. came to be after a brief stint as a chef in a Philadelphia restaurant. The pandemic shut that restaurant down, giving Ted the opportunity to fulfill his own dream as a restaurant owner. As for the menu, “southern food is in my blood,” he says. “It has been such a joy to bring some of that up here to South Jersey.”
