The GRAMMY Museum in Newark Celebrates NJ’s Rich Musical History

Music is a familiar medium that needs no explanation. Though each song means different things to different people, all have the power to affect listeners. But there’s also an educational aspect of music which tends to go unnoticed. In fact, this is something the GRAMMY Foundation wishes to change through its GRAMMY Museum project. The latest museum has found a home at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Steve Adubato, PhD., recently spoke with Bob Santelli for an episode of One-on-One with Steve Adubato. Santelli is the founding executive director of the GRAMMY Museum. The two took some time to discuss the recent expansion into Newark’s Prudential Center. Santelli also spoke about the GRAMMY Museum’s steadfast mission to inspire and educate music lovers of all ages.

The organization intentionally chose Brick City as the location for a GRAMMY Museum because of its comprehensive musical history.

“Newark has a great legacy in music,” said Santelli. “It’s one of the great jazz towns in all of America.”

The Prudential Center is a natural fit, as it is one of the great up-and-coming music centers in the country; as a result, the museum is able to exemplify the GRAMMY name by embracing New Jersey’s rich musical history.

“When you think of music, not just here in America but all across the world, the GRAMMY brand is world-renowned,” Santelli said. “It stands for artistic excellence. It stands for music education. It’s all about making sure that music remains to be America’s greatest cultural resource.”

GRAMMY Museums also exist in Nashville, the Mississippi Delta and Los Angeles. Santelli explained that the idea is to create a “necklace” of museums illuminating the significance of American music.
