The Mall at Short Hills has a new resident. Indigo, a lifestyle retailer with roots in Canada, is now open in its first United States location. Indigo is the world’s first cultural department store. In other words, the floor plan seamlessly divides into several sections; Wellness, Home, Joy of the Table, A Room of Her Own, IndigoPaper, IndigoKids and IndigoBaby.
The New Jersey location measures 30,000 square feet and describes itself as “a place to be inspired, unwind, and unplug. It’s a place to enjoy, visit, and meet people who have shared passions.” Indigo is loaded with books, both paired with the aforementioned themes and divided by genre. The welcoming atmosphere and thoughtful layout provides a comfortable environment for year-round shopping.

The Different Shades of Indigo
Each section of Indigo is equal parts interactive and comprehensive. The Wellness Shop focuses on three pillars; nourish, sleep and mindful meditation. This section offers products and books that take heavy influence from all three concepts. The “Home” and “Joy of the Table” areas have items to decorate your dream home and satisfy your inner chef.
Perhaps Indigo’s most immersive section is the IndigoKids area. This part of the store provides kids with an engaging and educational play area unlike any competing retailer. Fun and interesting books for children of all ages line the walls. Meanwhile, shelves are bursting with colorful and popular toys. There’s room to play and read, and parents can even sit down to draw and enjoy time with their children. IndigoKids plans to regularly feature story-time events and other special activities.
Right outside the IndigoKids entrance is an area specifically for teenagers. This section features an expanse of games, electronics, collectibles, books and graphic novels; as well as a seating area with outlets specifically for charging your mobile devices.
Items You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
In addition, the store offers a range of items, from candles to clothing, that are exclusive to Indigo. Its unique selection of products also includes highly sought-after brands, like S’well, Herschel, Casper and Kid Made Modern.
Future expansions to the New Jersey location include CaféIndigo. Moreover, the café will feature a custom menu with a full range of beverages from Philadelphia’s own La Colombe.
As one of the company’s largest stores, the Short Hills Indigo location is one you have to see to thoroughly appreciate. In fact, the store is massive, and will likely require multiple visits to ensure you don’t miss anything. Whether you’re looking for that special gift or a treat for yourself, Indigo is a one-stop destination for all.
