An Essential Guide to New Jersey for European Tourists

NJ Guide for European Tourists

Any resident of New Jersey can tell visitors how overlooked the state is by European tourists. With New York to the northeast and Philadelphia to the west, it is sandwiched between the most popular and historical regions in the US. But NJ has lots to offer and is worth a stop during a trip to the States. Below is an essential guide for Europeans visiting New Jersey.

Getting There and Around in NJ

If you are visiting New Jersey, you will most likely have come from a holiday in New York or be on one. The two are only separated by the Hudson River. Make no mistakes, New York is a spectacle to behold. From helicopter rides to historical sites, there are myriad amazing fun things to do in NYC and you will need to have plenty of time there. Yet, New Jersey is so close and offers a different experience. Newark Liberty International Airport is a main hub along with Atlantic City Airport. The former is often used as a transit hub for NYC itself, so you may find your landing happening in New Jersey regardless.

When you are staying in New York and want to visit, then train services depart from NYC Penn Station. These take around 20 minutes and can cost anything from $1 upwards. A slower alternative can be the bus service, which takes 35 minutes depending on traffic and can cost between $2 to $6.

Once you are in New Jersey, public transport is very efficient. The state has the third largest public transport system in the country, so travel anywhere is quick and cost-effective. Operators include NJ Transit, Amtrak, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

New Jersey’s Main Attractions

When it comes to New Jersey’s attractions, its famous boardwalks always top the list. As one of the most popular spots on the seaboard, Americans have been flocking here for well over 100 years. In 1870, the boardwalk was constructed to keep the sand from blowing into the town’s businesses. This was soon a prominent area for people to stroll and became prime entertainment real estate itself.

Europeans may have experienced these coastal towns before, particularly if they are from the UK or Germany. However, this area has a distinctly American character to it. Central to it is the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, filled with carnival rides and amusements. For longer walks, consider getting a rickshaw or renting a bike to traverse the boardwalk.

As a place for respite and relaxation, visit Cape May. Situated on Delaware Bay, it has an array of beautiful, golden sand beaches and architectural heritage that lends it a splendor unseen elsewhere. The jewel in this parade of holiday homes is the Emlen Physick Estate museum. Built for a famous doctor, visitors can tour the building which has been restored to its original state, and even take part in spooky evening ghost walks

European Tourists Guide to Visiting Atlantic City

Atlantic City is a main entertainment hub in New Jersey. Though often overshadowed by the Big Apple, it has just as much to offer. In many ways, it can provide a less tourist-driven experience.

The most famous attraction in Atlantic City is its casinos. At one time, the place was poised to be a rival to Las Vegas. The first legalized casino, the Resorts Atlantic City, opened its doors in 1978, followed by Caesars Boardwalk Regency. Now, Atlantic City houses major casinos such as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and the Borgata. In addition, these casinos povide luxury and attractions such as spas, hotels, and fine dining opportunities.

There is some fantastic cuisine all year round. As a coastal city, the huge influx of immigrants over the years has seen many cultures reflected in its food. From Korean to classic American, there is something for everyone. The aptly named Fat Sandwich is a staple street food, heaped with an array of toppings. The boardwalk is also awash with candied apples, boardwalk fries, and the fantastic New Jersey Hot Dogs loaded with toppings.  Doughnut lovers should also try the Italian-style Zeppoles

New Jersey offers the most effective solution to visiting New York. Tourists can stay here, save money, and take advantage of low-cost transportation. This saves money for more fun things to do in NYC. But don’t just concentrate on New York itself, as NJ has plenty to offer. Free up some space on that travel itinerary and enjoy everything New Jersey has to offer.
