Students with special needs shouldn’t have fewer opportunities for education. Fortunately, New Jersey has outstanding educational services for such students. The state also boasts groups, like the Child Advocacy Team in Newark, that ensure students receive the proper accommodations. Though there is still much work to do, the state is making significant progress.
For this episode of Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato, Debra Clifford, Esq. and Mary Frances Palisano, Esq., stop by. Clifford and Palisano lead the Child Advocacy Team for Gibbons P.C. in Newark. The pair sat down with show host Steve Adubato, PhD., to discuss the services children with disabilities have available. They also spoke about how parents can ensure their child is receiving the correct educational services.
Special Needs Services Available For NJ Students
The Gibbons Child Advocacy Team helps to address the legal needs of children and their families. In fact, Clifford and Palisano provide families with advice and personal representation in various types of legal matters; this includes special education law and student rights. They also counsel parents and guardians in order to secure the necessary education services. Specifically, those the children are entitled to under New Jersey and federal law.
“Special education is a series of accommodations—services—that are provided to children with disabilities who are identified as needing services to help them obtain an appropriate education,” explains Clifford.
Students with special needs may receive a number of services to facilitate their education. Most receive individual education plans (IEPs); which can include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, some sort of cognitive therapy and more. These services assist the students in their daily endeavors and help them to make the most of their education; or “catch up,” as Clifford describes.
