Today in NJ, 2017: Drinking Straw Day
January 3, 2017, is Drinking Straw Day. In the 1800s, the rye grass straw was invented, but it turned to mush when exposed to liquid. Inventor Marvin C. Stone was frustrated by the straw giving his drink a grassy taste, so he patented the modern drinking straw in 1888. He made it by wrapping paper around a pencil and then gluing the paper. He later refined the invention after building a machine to coat the paper straw with wax to hold it together (source).
