December 7, 2017, is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This day honors those who died or were injured when Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, was attacked in 1941. This year marks the 76th anniversary of the attack, during which more than 3,500 Americans lost their lives. National Pearl Harbor Day is honored with many tributes and services; most notably, the American flag is flown at half-staff until sunset as a sign of respect for the fallen.

Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony in Camden takes place on December 8 at Battleship New Jersey. The ceremony is from 10:30 am to Noon.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Service in Cranford will take place at 9:00 am. It will be an outdoor memorial service to remember the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Ceremony in North Brunswick is December 7 at 7:00 pm. It takes place at Veterans Park. The public is invited and asked to bring a flashlight. For more information, call 908-307-3260.

Today in NJ, 2016: International Civil Aviation Day

December 7, 2016, is International Civil Aviation Day. The International Civil Aviation Organization created this holiday on December 7, 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. Those who observe the day include air traffic controllers, airport management, airlines and people of the aviation community around the world.

International Civil Aviation Day also celebrates dangerous flights where the pilots and crew managed to save the passengers. If you wish to take part in the celebration, head to one of these local spots today.

Today in NJ, 2015: National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

December 7, 2015 is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Today is a day to remember and honor the Americans who died in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu, Hawaii. 2,390 Americans were lost when an American naval base was attacked by hundreds of Japanese fighter planes.

The attack lasted two hours and destroyed about 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and 200 airplanes. Those interested can pay their respects at one of the museums listed below.

Battleship New Jersey in Camden offers interactive tours of the USS New Jersey. They are open Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. For December 7, they are honoring Pearl Harbor with a ceremony at 10:00 am. For more information call, 866-877-6262.

Naval Air Station Aviation Museum in Wildwood used to be an active dive-bomber squadron training facility during World War II. It has been restored into an Aviation Museum with many aircraft engines, special exhibits, and educational interactive displays. They are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Navy Lakehurst Historical Society in Lakehurst is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst.
