The SoJo Spa Club in Edgewater has a brand new service they think guests will love. The Authentic Volcanic Sand Bath recreates an ancient therapeutic treatment all the way from Japan. Much like the other treatments available at SoJo, the sand bath boasts healing properties for a variety of ailments. Particularly, it is said to help with muscle pain and inflammation, but also provides a general body detox as well.
After heading to the sixth floor, the Volcanic Sand Bath area is just past the cafe. Currently, they only accept same-day appointments and encourage guests to register when they first arrive. At first, signing up for a session may feel a bit intimidating. SoJo Spa Club asks participants to fill out a safety waiver as a precaution before entry. But don’t let this scare you off; SoJo staff members are there to answer any questions and thoroughly explain the details of what to expect.
Basically, the staff rake hot sand over your body, covering you from your shoulders down to your feet. It is a communal dry sand bath for up to 8-12 people at a time. SoJo Spa Club imports naturally occurring volcanic sand from Ibusuki, Japan for an authentic experience; they are currently the only spa in the US to do this. As they pack the sand on top of you, you’ll feel some pressure on your chest and body. Those who are claustrophobic need not worry though, as your head is fully exposed at all times. In addition, the sand is light enough that you can get up at any time. The staff are always nearby and do an excellent job of making you feel comfortable. They also assure you that it’s perfectly fine to get up or stop if you’re feeling any discomfort.
There are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure the best possible experience: For one thing, make sure to eat something before the session. The sand is hot, so going in on an empty stomach can make you feel dizzy or disoriented. Likewise, it’s important to drink plenty of water both before and after. There are cups of water available both inside the Volcanic Sand Bath area and right outside, in the cafe. Finally, a full session can last either ten or fifteen minutes, depending on your preference. I think ten minutes is the sweet spot to get the full effect. Of course, this depends on your body type and heat tolerance.
