The world can be a difficult place to navigate. For individuals with some form of impairment or disability, this challenge is magnified. Particularly when it comes to the workplace, many with disabilities face constant proverbial roadblocks. When everyday chores, traveling and even education is made more difficult, the burden of job searching can feel overwhelming. Prudential Financial wants to change that.
The United States, with the implementation of various programs and laws – such as the American Disabilities Act – has made significant strides in helping its citizens. However, Prudential Financial wants to take additional measures to aid those with disabilities when it comes to further enhancing workplace accommodations.
Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion at Prudential Financial, Inc., Kam Wong, visited the set of Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato to tell viewers about the importance of raising awareness and supporting hiring people with disabilities.
Wong expressed to show host Steve Adubato, PhD., that she believes it is important to create an inclusive work environment where individuals – especially those with disabilities – feel like they can bring their “authentic self” to the workplace. This fosters a happy work atmosphere and high employee morale that also improves the efficiency of the way an organization operates.
Though we have made progress as a country from where we once stood in the treatment of those with disabilities, Wong explained that we are not nearly where we need to be.
Wong went on to illustrate the idea of “Universal Design,” which is a construction concept that not only aids people with disabilities, but the general public as well. “The whole notion about it is that it helps everybody. Not just the person with disabilities,” she explained.
“We really want to build to a culture and a climate where we are inclusive of people with disabilities across all dimensions; in the workplace, in the marketplace, in the community,” Wong said.
